2 Each participant writes his or her name and a statement or question on<br />

which comment is invited.<br />

3 He or she then writes his or her own response to the statement or<br />

question on the same sheet.<br />

4 The sheets are passed to other members of the subgroup who add their<br />

own responses to the sheet. All writing should be completed in a<br />

maximum of 30 minutes and should be done silently.<br />

5 When complete, the original writer reads out the question and all the<br />

responses to it, using it to generate discussion.<br />

Benefits<br />

The benefit of i<strong>de</strong>a writing is as a diversion when the workshop lea<strong>de</strong>r<br />

judges that the participants need some quiet time. It is particularly useful<br />

in traditional 'low' sessions, such as after lunch, as it involves little<br />

energetic activity but much thought.<br />
