Purpose<br />
To help a process which aims at making the most effective and efficient use<br />
of existing production structures.<br />
When to use<br />
When an organization needs to improve its maintenance system and to<br />
educate operators in maintenance techniques.<br />
How to use<br />
Use all the company's functions and personnel to contribute to maintenance<br />
through both individual effort and teamwork.<br />
Benefits<br />
It provi<strong>de</strong>s effective and efficient use of existing production methods. It<br />
establishes a thorough system of preventive maintenance, condition<br />
monitoring etc. for the equipment's entire lifespan.<br />
Example<br />
A typical procedure for total production maintenance is as follows:<br />
1 Develop and agree the maintenance strategy and i<strong>de</strong>ntify priorities for<br />
the key items of plant and equipment in terms of their contribution to<br />
operating plans. Take account of the company's manufacturing<br />
philosophy and its manufacturing organization.<br />
2 Establish target levels of maintenance <strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>nt on plant and<br />
equipment availability and i<strong>de</strong>ntify those items which <strong>de</strong>mand close<br />
attention and control.<br />
3 Review the maintenance organization, especially in its relationship<br />
with production planning and scheduling and production itself,<br />
addressing, for example, the advantages of, and barriers to, combining<br />
responsibilities for maintenance, particularly where production<br />
staff can contribute to the provision of information on operating<br />
difficulties or diagnostic routines.
