MANAGEMENT METHODS 77
Method 30
Why-how charting
Purpose
When thinking in both abstract and concrete terms, and needing to move
between the two, why-how charting enables a goal to be translated into
action.
When to use
Either individually or as part of a group, the method can be used to:
• map the implications of a goal
• generate alternative statements of a problem
• develop alternative solutions
• present findings and stimulate discussion
• begin the planning process
How to use
There are three simple stages:
1 Write the goal or problem in the centre of a flip chart.
2 Ask a series of 'why' questions and plot the answers on the page above
the goal.
3 Ask a series of 'how' questions and plot the answers on the page below
the goal.
Benefits
By bridging between strategic and tactical thinking, the technique makes it
possible to challenge goals, perhaps revealing new ways of meeting them,
while simultaneously planning to meet them.
Example
In the example below the problem is that the managing director IS
overloaded. The desired goal is to reduce the loading.
Why? To generate new business
Why? To devote more time to marketing
Goal Reduce the MD's loading
How? Identify what can be delegated
How? Discuss with staff their roles
