Benefits<br />

By establishing the facts about the inci<strong>de</strong>nce of failure, a team can plan to<br />

i<strong>de</strong>ntify the causes of failure and look for ways of removing them. Actions<br />

are taken on the basis of evi<strong>de</strong>nce, not feeling.<br />

Checksheets are an excellent way of involving people in quality improvement.<br />

They give a simple method of data collection that can be easily<br />

un<strong>de</strong>rstood and applied in a wi<strong>de</strong> range of areas.<br />

Example<br />

During an attempt to reduce unauthorized absence from work, a team<br />

collected data on the day of the week that absences occurred. The<br />

checksheet shown in Figure 1 gives the results of the study over a six-month<br />

period. The team used the data in consultation with <strong>de</strong>partmental<br />

managers to crack down on absenteeism.<br />
