They help to reduce the amount of 'gut feeling' involved with the problemsolving. A word of caution. Just because there appears to be a relationship, it does not mean that one thing causes another; the relationship might be fortuitous or through a third, unknown, variable. If a relationship appears to have been found, proof must be sought. Example A team is examining the relationship between the mileage of salesmen and the volume of business sold. Mileage, the cause, is plotted along the horizontal axis and sales per annum, the effect, are plotted along the vertical axis.
