Plan: When a problem is <strong>de</strong>tected in product <strong>de</strong>velopment, first find the<br />

causes of the problem. The <strong>de</strong>cision to make changes must be based on<br />

facts, and therefore it is necessary to obtain the data to <strong>de</strong>tect the causes<br />

of error and variation.<br />

2 Do: When the cause of a problem is <strong>de</strong>tected, a quality improvement<br />

team will take responsibility for carrying through the necessary steps to<br />

solve the problem.<br />

3 Check: When proper steps have been taken to solve the problem, an<br />

investigation will take place to check whether the improvement process<br />

was successful.<br />

4 Action: If the steps taken were successful, the new and better quality<br />

level should be accepted. If the steps taken were not successful, then the<br />

PDCA cycle should be repeated.<br />
