Purpose
To demonstrate to yourself, your customers and an independent assessment
body that you have an effective quality management system in place.
When to use
When trying to formalize operations to ensure consistency of approach.
How to use
There are 13 steps associated with building a quality management system
(OMS).
1 Obtain management understanding of, and commitment to, the quality
management approach.
2 Define the scope of the activities to be included in the OMS.
3 Define the organizational structure and responsibilities of those within
the scope of the OMS.
4 Audit the existing systems and procedures against the requirements of
the standard.
S Develop a plan to write the necessary procedures.
6 Train sufficient personnel to write their own procedures.
7 Draft and edit the procedures and gain agreement to them.
8 Compile a draft quality manual.
9 Implement the system on a trial basis.
10 Train internal auditors to carry out audits of the system and its
operation.
11 Revise the operation of the system in light of the results of audits and
other information.
12 Apply for registration (sometimes called third-party approval) from
an accredited body.
13 Maintain the system by internal audit, using it as an opportunity to
improve.
Benefit
By establishing a consistent approach, it becomes easier to ensure that
tasks are carried out in the same way whoever does them. This in turn
ensures consistent quality for customers.
