3.3.3.2. Other ecological sensitive areas<br />

All of them are estuaries and coastal lakes linked to rivers. Estuaries are important buffer zones as it is a<br />

transition zone between freshwater environments and are subject to marine influences such as tides, waves and<br />

influx of saline water, fresh water and sediment. This inflow of both marine and fresh water brings lots of nutrients<br />

in both water and sediment makes them most productive habitats in the world. They are also important for their<br />

bird fauna. An important part of the bird community in the Kanyakumari district lives around these coastal bodies<br />

of water..<br />

Thengapattinam estuary, also a CRZ-I site.<br />

Valliyar estuary near Kadiapattinam.<br />

Manakudy estuary in between East and West Manakudy villages, also a IBA site<br />

Two minor estuaries also: they are<br />

o Pambar estuary near Colachel<br />

o Pantri estuary near Rajakkamangalam.<br />

Pantry (Rajakkamangalam) Estuary and Marshy land contains a Coastal ecosystem, sand dunes and Sea turtle<br />

breeding site near Azhathangarai beach. Rajakkamangalam estuary and Azhathangarai marshy land is<br />

considered as one of the breeding and feeding ground for many birds like Painted stork, cormorant, spot billed<br />

pelicans, purple swaphen, dabchick, garganey, purple heron, open bill stork ,black winged stilt etc<br />
