Course Description:<br />

This course introduces the basic elements of US national security organization, process and policy.<br />

Through readings, lecture and guided discussion, you will also gain a better understanding of current<br />

international issues affecting the military profession. The course further focuses on developing the<br />

communication skills required of an Air Force officer.<br />

Course Objectives:<br />

1. Comprehend the basic elements of national security process and policy.<br />

2. Comprehend the air and space power functions and competencies.<br />

3. Understand selected roles of the military in society and current issues affecting the military profession.<br />

4. Understand selected provisions of the military justice system.<br />

5. Comprehend the responsibility, authority, and functions of an Air Force commander.<br />

6. Apply listening, speaking, and writing skills in Air Force-centric formats and situations with accuracy,<br />

clarity, and appropriate style.<br />

7. Understand the factors that facilitate a smooth transition from civilian to military life.<br />

8. Increase understanding of language and culture differences of other regions of the world where the<br />

United States has interests.<br />

Texts / Reading Assignments: As readings will provide a framework for class discussion, I strongly<br />

recommend you read the assigned selections before the relevant lecture. There may be a ‘pop-quiz’ or<br />

activities that will require you to be familiar with the information.<br />

Classroom Rules of Engagement<br />

1. Attendance: Cadets must attend at least 80 percent of scheduled class sessions to achieve a passing<br />

grade. However, you should certainly strive to attend ALL classes, as doing the minimum necessary is<br />

not encouraged either in AFROTC or in the operational Air Force. Academic only students (non-<br />

AFROTC students) do not have a minimum attendance percentage. However, your class participation<br />

grade will be influenced by your attendance.
