just as steadily, stabilizing during the period from 1987 to 1989. This<br />

very important trend can be obscured depending <strong>on</strong> the c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> used<br />

for defining inhalants.<br />

Results obtained from survey inhalant questi<strong>on</strong>s also are highly sensitive<br />

to the wording and phrasing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the questi<strong>on</strong>. For most other drugs, as<br />

l<strong>on</strong>g as the questi<strong>on</strong> is clearly put and the resp<strong>on</strong>se alternatives are simple<br />

and direct, rates <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> use reported do not seem to be highly dependent <strong>on</strong><br />

the form <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the questi<strong>on</strong>. For example, most surveys that are given in the<br />

same time period to similar populati<strong>on</strong>s show almost identical rates <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> use<br />

for marijuana, cocaine, and most other drugs, even when the phrasing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the questi<strong>on</strong>s differs somewhat from survey to survey. This is not true,<br />

however, for inhalants. As an example, the M<strong>on</strong>itoring the Future study<br />

(Johnst<strong>on</strong> et al. 1992b) uses the following questi<strong>on</strong>:<br />

On how many occasi<strong>on</strong>s (if any) have you sniffed glue, or breathed the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tents <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> aerosol spray cans, or inhaled any other gases or sprays to get<br />

high . . .<br />
