The survey results also provided informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the durati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> use<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g former users (i.e., pers<strong>on</strong>s who reported “ever” using who did not<br />

report use in the 12-m<strong>on</strong>th period prior to interview). Am<strong>on</strong>g male users,<br />

this period lasted an average <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 6.6 years and a mean <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 5.5 years for<br />

females. Users living in smaller towns also had l<strong>on</strong>ger mean periods <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

inhalant use, as did individuals with higher income levels (table 12).<br />

Data also were collected <strong>on</strong> efforts made by individuals to stop inhalant<br />

use. Overall, 53 percent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> inhalant users stated that they had attempted<br />

to stop their use. These attempt rates were higher am<strong>on</strong>g those who were<br />

unemployed (72.9 percent) and am<strong>on</strong>g students (60.6 percent). On the<br />
