At interview they found <strong>on</strong>ly 106 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the 133 positive resp<strong>on</strong>dents<br />

c<strong>on</strong>firmed the questi<strong>on</strong>naire resp<strong>on</strong>se, whereas all the matched c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

group c<strong>on</strong>firmed their negative resp<strong>on</strong>se. Of the 106, 19.4 percent had<br />

sniffed more than 30 times, and 33.9 percent had sniffed <strong>on</strong>ce or twice.<br />

The toxicological testing not <strong>on</strong>ly detected volatile compounds in six <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the positive resp<strong>on</strong>dents but also in <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the negative c<strong>on</strong>trols (toluene).<br />

Experiences such as these illustrate how much attenti<strong>on</strong> to detail is<br />

required to collect meaningful data in this area. Swadi (1990) discussed<br />

the validity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> data collected from adolescents using self-reported<br />

questi<strong>on</strong>naires. Clearly worded questi<strong>on</strong>naires, comprehensible to<br />

youngsters aged 11 or younger with poor reading age and comprehensi<strong>on</strong><br />

are not easy to produce, particularly if they are to be used by people <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

different cultures or circumstances. For example, the following questi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

produce c<strong>on</strong>sistently different results (Edwards, pers<strong>on</strong>al communicati<strong>on</strong>,<br />
