Among these, only about one-half had used in the past year, and a little less had used in the past month, as shown in table 8. There were no significant statistical differences in the three categories <strong>of</strong> use among the three schools (using the x 2 test). Among those who had “ever used” the drugs, the main sources were the home (32.6 percent) and friends (17.4 percent). Twenty-five (13.9 percent) <strong>of</strong> the students reported that their friends used inhalants, especially glue, petrol, and sprays, as shown in table 9. TABLE 5. Some <strong>of</strong> the responses are listed in table 10. Most statements referred to the reasons for taking inhalants and the effects experienced. Many students stated that inhalants were dangerous and should be avoided. Some called on the Nigerian Government to do something about controlling the availability <strong>of</strong> substances containing solvents. 182
