3.8 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION<br />

Mannich bases and Schiff bases of isatin were prepared in this<br />

chapter. Isatin is known to produce N-Mannich bases using formaldehyde and<br />

secondary amines while it is known to give 3-substiuted Schiff bases when<br />

reacted with primary amine.<br />

Isatin-N-Mannich bases were prepared using the known methodology<br />

and their Schiff bases were prepared using two different primary amine<br />

functional groups, one is 2-propylpentanohydrazide and another is 2aminobenzothiazole.<br />

2-propylpentanohydrazide was prepared by reacting<br />

hydrazine hydrate with Methyl-2-propylpentanoate and 2-propylpentanoate<br />

was prepared by the esterification of 2-propylpentanoic acid which is also<br />

known as very well known anticonvulsant drug “Valproic acid”. 2aminobenzothiazoles<br />

also possess varied biological profile. Thus two<br />

biologically active components were substituted on isatin to study the<br />

biological activity profile of title compounds.<br />

Schiff base of isatin using 2-propylpenanohydrazide is not reported so<br />

far while Schiff base of isatin and 2-aminobenzothiazole is not much explored.<br />

Moreover Mannich bases of these Schiff bases are not reported so far.<br />

Furthermore acetylation was carried out on isatin-Schiff bases. Thus it is first<br />

attempt to prepare three different types of indolinone derivatives and their<br />

anticancer evaluation.<br />

The compounds prepared in this chapter possess indole nucleus and<br />

are basically indolinone derivatives. Indoles and indolinones are very well<br />

known for their anticancer activity. Thus all the compounds were screened for<br />

their anticancer activity against three different cancer cell lines. (viz. breast,<br />

lung and stomach) All the compounds found to be good to moderate active<br />

against all the three cancer cell lines.<br />
