Abschlussbericht der Tunesienexkursion
• When Ben Ali was still here people avoided to talk about politics. In the street now
it's different. Sometimes we can see circles of discussion on the street. So yes,
there is a difference. People avoided to talk about politics, now all Tunisia is talking
about politics in the middle of the street.
10. Frage: Do you think the public space isn't in control anymore, not at all? Or is there
still some control mechanism, maybe?
• Yeah, I know that there is control mechanisms. They talked about the dissolution
of the police, but I can tell you that now, right now, here there are some officers
from the political police and control everything. I know them. They know me and,
yeah. So there is some control.
11. Frage: But they won't do anything, like repress you now.
• They used ta harass people. Now it's really different.
(Kurze Unterbrechung. Mann von der Sicherheit spricht mit Kathrin)
12. Frage: What do you think which party is at the moment most dominant in the streets?
• I really don't know which one, but there are at least five or six political parties which
are more appearing like the islamist party, nahda, takatol (???) and the communist
party, maybe.
13. Frage: And are there still some structures? Is the old Ben Ali regime still visible in
this?
• Yes, the regime of Ben Ali is still here. The Ben Ali party is apparently not-existant,
but the people who used to work for Ben Ali organize themselves in new political
parties.
14. Frage: As a woman, do you think repression during the time of Ben Ali were different
concerning men and women?
• I really can't tell. Everybody was oppressed under the regime of Ben Ali. Even
women were tortured and arrested. SO I don't think there is a big difference in the
repression between men and women.
15. Frage: Do you think there is a special public space for women in Tunisia? Because,
you know there is many cafés and it is forbidden for women to enter, but it is a space for
men. Is there something in the opposite?
• In this culture it is not prohibited by law, but prohibited by traditions, maybe by
practice, yes. But there are cafés where men an women can sit together so there
is no specific public space for women.
