ective. the evaluations did not show any negative
effects of the liming like decrease of exchangeable
potassium or reduced content and storage of
organic carbon.
site diversity and biodiversity
the bze-collective covers 33 soil types, 95 substrate
series, 28 forest vegetation types, 447 plant
species of the ground vegetation. this proves a
great natural diversity for the site conditions of
the forests in Rhineland-Palatinate. however, the
results of the bze i referred to a levelling of the
chemical topsoil properties towards „acid and oligotrophic",
but which is effectively counteracted
by liming and emission reduction, as shown by
the bze ii results. the evaluation of the vegetation
data with regard to the indicator values by
ellenberg (1992, 1996) indicates a considerable
influence of acidification, nitrogen eutrophication
and thinning or clearing out of the stands in particular
through storm damage onto the composition
of the ground vegetation.
impact of climate change on forest soils
for each of the 165 bze plots the site water
balance was simulated using current measuring
data and WettReG climate projections for one
control- and two future time periods with a water
balance model (lWf/bRooK 90). based on diffe-
rent stress characteristics (amongst others transpiration
difference, relative soil water availability,
air capacity) it is examined how the different sites
behave with changed environmental conditions
and in which extent the respective stand type
influences the vulnerability. first evaluations
show a clear increase of the number of days with
drought stress particularly in the distant future.
availability of the data
the bze-data are stored in an aCCess-database
at the faWf. in addition the data were also
saved into the nationwide bze-database at the
vti-Woi, into the database of the Rhineland-
Palatinate forest site research group and the
profile-database of the state office for Geology
and Mining. the data of the eu grid were entered
also into the eu-biosoil-database of the forest
soil Coordinating Center (inbo Geraardsbergen),
and the institute for World forestry of the
vti in hamburg. the data are used furthermore
for identification of vulnerable areas to climate
change and for evaluation of nutrient sustainability
associated with timber and biomass harvest.
the data are available to forest-owners and forestry
offices of their particular territory in form of
detailed reports.
all essential results of both soil inventories are
generally accessible on the web site of the faWf.
