shattered at hav<strong>in</strong>g spoken to her spiritual mentor <strong>in</strong> such terms and<br />

<strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong> hastens to expla<strong>in</strong> to us, (<strong>in</strong>trusively r th<strong>in</strong>k), that "it<br />

was <strong>in</strong>evitable that she should judge <strong>the</strong> Frate unfairly on a question <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual suffer<strong>in</strong>g, at which ~ looked with <strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>of</strong> personal<br />

tenderness, and he with <strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretio conviction."<br />

We see Romola, hav<strong>in</strong>g rejected Savonarola's leadership, seek<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d ano<strong>the</strong>r basis for assess<strong>in</strong>g moral situations. The ~ate's public<br />

<strong>in</strong>sistence on his own <strong>in</strong>fallibility, (Whatever his private doubts), has<br />

alienated her and revived her conditioned distaste for visions and<br />

priestly fanaticism. Romola's moral confusion is such that li<strong>the</strong> vision<br />

<strong>of</strong> any great purpose, any end <strong>of</strong> existence which could ennoble endurance<br />

and exalt <strong>the</strong> common deeds <strong>of</strong> a dusty life vlith div<strong>in</strong>e ardours, was<br />

utterly eclipsed for her now by <strong>the</strong> sense <strong>of</strong> a confusion <strong>in</strong> h~n th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

which made all effort a mere dragg<strong>in</strong>g at tangled threads, all fellowship,<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r for resistance or advocacy, mere unfairness and exclusive-<br />
