mente <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong> may write <strong>of</strong> "hopeful activity •• • new conceptions<br />

and new deeds" 85 but as I have po<strong>in</strong>ted out earlier, <strong>the</strong> new activity<br />

does not allow room for any "marg<strong>in</strong>ality. II 86 The potential <strong>of</strong> her<br />

identity, <strong>the</strong>ir achiev<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> autonOll\Vi <strong>in</strong>stead, by means <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r/or<br />

situations, <strong>the</strong> characters are brought to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> deny<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>the</strong> frame <strong>of</strong> reference <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>novels</strong>, <strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> freedom or <strong>of</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>ality<br />

is not manifest. Because we tend to accept <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong>'s premises,<br />

we f<strong>in</strong>d ourselves approv<strong>in</strong>g and oondon<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> various decisions, with<br />

only a vestigial uneas<strong>in</strong>ess. If, however, we place <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellectual<br />

cause <strong>of</strong> Jewish nationalism.<br />

Doro<strong>the</strong>a seeks <strong>the</strong> "perfect Right, II 87 Mr Lyon t s "higher rule"; 88<br />

Deronda hopes for <strong>the</strong> "very best <strong>of</strong> human possibilities. It 89 They have<br />

all set up for <strong>the</strong>mselves a goal <strong>of</strong> service that transcends <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

to decide, however, whe<strong>the</strong>r such a selfless goal does not itself become<br />

as distort<strong>in</strong>g a speck, as constra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a limitation as <strong>the</strong> speck<br />
