"social <strong>the</strong>ory which advocates <strong>the</strong> free and <strong>in</strong>dependent action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual, as opposed to communistic methods <strong>of</strong> organisation and state<br />

<strong>in</strong>terference." (OED, "Individualism", 2)<br />

In ~ Open Society ~ its Enemies, Karl Popper expresses concern at<br />

<strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>in</strong>dividualism, because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se two 'quite' dist<strong>in</strong>ct usages, can<br />

be, and <strong>of</strong>ten is taken as <strong>the</strong> opposite <strong>of</strong> both altruism and collectivism.<br />

He declares that "it is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g that for Plato, and for most Platonists,<br />

an altruistic <strong>in</strong>dividualism (as, for <strong>in</strong>stance, that <strong>of</strong> Dickens)<br />

cannot exist. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Plato, <strong>the</strong> only alternative to collectivism<br />

is egoism; he simply identifies all collectivism with altruism, and all<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividualism with egoism," Thus !l<strong>in</strong> defend<strong>in</strong>g collectivism, he can appeal<br />

to our humanitarian feel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> unselfishness; <strong>in</strong> his attack, he can<br />

It is easy to see how this criticism <strong>of</strong> Plato could also' apply to<br />

<strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong> and o<strong>the</strong>r n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century th<strong>in</strong>kers who saw no problem<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> identification <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividualism '.'lith egoism. Stephen Lukes, discuss<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> various "unit-ideas" <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term "<strong>in</strong>dividualism" comments<br />

on <strong>the</strong> prevalence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

pejorative mean<strong>in</strong>g signified by <strong>the</strong> French vlOrd,·<strong>in</strong>dividualisme, which<br />

implied <strong>the</strong> "social, moral and political isolation <strong>of</strong> rootless, self<strong>in</strong>terested,<br />

and acquisitive <strong>in</strong>dividuals tmco:1cerne(". ','rith social ideals<br />

and unamenable to social control." 81 It is <strong>in</strong>dividualism <strong>in</strong> this sense<br />

that so threatens <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong> and expla<strong>in</strong>s Wordsworthts prayer <strong>in</strong> his<br />

"unchartered freedom" or "<strong>the</strong> weight <strong>of</strong> chance-desires." <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong><br />
