self-conta<strong>in</strong>ed, proud young lady <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g scenes. Th6 underly<strong>in</strong>g<br />

commentary po<strong>in</strong>ts constantly to <strong>the</strong> exaggerated and unrealistic quality<br />

<strong>of</strong> Gwendolen' s expectations, both <strong>of</strong> herself and what she can-achieve,' -/ fi,.-;}<br />

and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. Grappl<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> implications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir loss <strong>of</strong> fortune,<br />

she says pettishly to her mo<strong>the</strong>r: '''It seems to me a very extraord<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

world if people <strong>in</strong> our position must s<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> this waY all at<br />

once' •••• <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r worlds with which she was conversant be<strong>in</strong>g constructed<br />

with a sense <strong>of</strong> fitness that arranged her mm future agreeably. II 109<br />

We encounter similar solipsistic beliAfs <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r egoists, for example,<br />

Arthur Donnithorne or Rosamond V<strong>in</strong>cy. <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong> sums up such mistaken<br />

notions when she po<strong>in</strong>ts out that "<strong>the</strong> most obst<strong>in</strong>ate beliefs that mortals<br />

enterta<strong>in</strong> about <strong>the</strong>mselves are such as <strong>the</strong>y have no evidence for beyond a<br />

constant puls<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>.<strong>the</strong>ir self-satisfaction--as it were a hidden seed <strong>of</strong><br />

madness, a confidence that <strong>the</strong>y can move <strong>the</strong> world without precise notion<br />

<strong>of</strong> stand<strong>in</strong>g-place or lever. II 110 The key words from this statement are<br />

"evidence" and "precise notion." For <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong>, as we have seen, <strong>the</strong><br />

world was governed by irreversible laws and freedom consisted <strong>in</strong> recognis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>se laws, co-operat<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong>m where possible and not stra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st those that were immutable. In <strong>the</strong>se terms, Gwendolen's ignorance<br />

or partial ignorance that this is how th<strong>in</strong>gs are makes mean<strong>in</strong>gless<br />

her defiant claim that "she did not mean to submit, and let misfortune<br />

(10 what it would with her." 111 It is <strong>in</strong>evitable tha.t she should suffer
