construct for moral grovnh. It is also important to decide whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

such beliefs constitute limitations and restrictions on <strong>the</strong> manipulation<br />

<strong>of</strong> plot or <strong>the</strong>me, or on <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> characters and <strong>the</strong> sorts <strong>of</strong><br />

choices <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

I will now turn my attention to some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> issues that have emerged<br />

from an exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong>'s moral and psychological stance. I<br />

Let us now exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> ways <strong>in</strong> which <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong> def<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> selfhood<br />

<strong>of</strong> her characters and <strong>the</strong> sorts <strong>of</strong> opportunities she provides for<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. We will also need to decide whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>se opportunities allow for<br />

a free range <strong>of</strong> expression, or whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y restrict <strong>the</strong> characters'<br />

freedom <strong>of</strong> choice.
