to <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> habits, and to <strong>the</strong> difficulties we have, 1)oth <strong>in</strong> acquir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>m and ridd<strong>in</strong>g ourselves <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, if <strong>the</strong>y prove undesirable or<br />

'When we come to exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> <strong>novels</strong> we see that <strong>George</strong><br />

<strong>Eliot</strong>'s references to habit fall <strong>in</strong>to two categories depend<strong>in</strong>g on whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong> habit belongs to one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>or characters or whe<strong>the</strong>r it relates to<br />

a protagonist. Sometimes it is just a pass<strong>in</strong>g phrase as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

reference to Jack L<strong>in</strong>gon <strong>in</strong> Felix Holt as a "man <strong>of</strong> sixty ••• with a m<strong>in</strong>d<br />

and with habits dried hard by <strong>the</strong> years." 5 At o<strong>the</strong>r times, it is a technique<br />

for present<strong>in</strong>g character growth or decl<strong>in</strong>e by means <strong>of</strong> her belief <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> psychological determ<strong>in</strong>ism. Both k<strong>in</strong>ds, however, show a def<strong>in</strong>ite<br />

connection vnth <strong>the</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ories <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school <strong>of</strong> association<br />

psychology. I will briefly outl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> background and development <strong>of</strong> this<br />

school before discuss<strong>in</strong>g hoVl <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong> <strong>in</strong>corporated its pr<strong>in</strong>Ciples <strong>in</strong>to<br />

her <strong>novels</strong>.<br />

The law <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> association <strong>of</strong> ideas was orig<strong>in</strong>ally formulated by<br />

Locke as an epistemological corollary to his sensationalism. Reject<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>nate ideas, Locke claims that <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d is a passive receptor<br />

<strong>of</strong> sense impressions; "<strong>the</strong> senses," he says, "at first let <strong>in</strong><br />

particular ~ and furnish <strong>the</strong> yet empty cab<strong>in</strong>et." 6 This is <strong>the</strong> same<br />

basic assumption that causes <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong> to vrrite <strong>in</strong> The Millon <strong>the</strong><br />

Floss about "that familiar hearth, 'where <strong>the</strong> pattern <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rug and <strong>the</strong><br />

grate and <strong>the</strong> fire-irons were 'first ideas' that it was no more possible<br />

to criticise than <strong>the</strong> solidity and extension <strong>of</strong> matter." 7 In Locke's<br />

schema, what is important is that <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>the</strong> tabula ~, is passive,<br />

stor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>puts from <strong>the</strong> sensory world but not itself structur<strong>in</strong>g exper­<br />
