about books and. musio and pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, his tempt<strong>in</strong>g voioe is oontrasted<br />

both with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner voioe <strong>of</strong> her conscience and with <strong>the</strong> "voioe<br />

<strong>of</strong> a bro<strong>the</strong>r who, ages ago, felt and suffered and. renounoed--<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

cloister, perhaps, with serge gown and tonsured head, with much chant<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and long fasts, and with a fashion <strong>of</strong> speech different fran ours--but<br />

under <strong>the</strong> same silent far-<strong>of</strong>f heavens, and with <strong>the</strong> same passionate<br />

Kempis and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner voioe <strong>of</strong> her conscience which <strong>in</strong>terrupts Fhilip t 5<br />

tempt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> friendship. In this way "<strong>the</strong> voioe that said this made<br />

sweet music to Maggie; but athwart it <strong>the</strong>re came an urgent monotonous<br />

warn<strong>in</strong>g from ano<strong>the</strong>r voioe which she had been learn<strong>in</strong>g to obey. It 9 And<br />
