Felix's decision to embrace <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g class. Deronda sets<br />

out with <strong>the</strong> full weight <strong>of</strong> his author's approval and as I have shown<br />

with Doro<strong>the</strong>a, unless we are careful, we f<strong>in</strong>d ourselves accept<strong>in</strong>g too<br />

uncritically <strong>the</strong> terms <strong>in</strong> which <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong> presents her characters'<br />

choices. In this case we may tend to forget that when Deronda sets out<br />

to slay dragons he is far from penniless; he is provided with a<br />

gentleman' 5 annuity and a tender, submissive wife to adm<strong>in</strong>ister to his<br />

needs.<br />

In Individualism Reconsidered, David Riesman bemoans <strong>the</strong> loss from<br />

life <strong>of</strong> what he calls "marg<strong>in</strong>ality,1I which <strong>in</strong>cludes possibilities <strong>of</strong><br />

orig<strong>in</strong>ality and creativity, as well as <strong>the</strong> capacity to stand somewhat<br />

outside <strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g systems and redesign <strong>the</strong>m. In discuss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> shift<strong>in</strong>g<br />

balance between what he terms "<strong>in</strong>ner-direction" and "o<strong>the</strong>r-direction, II<br />

he writes that<br />

no ideology, however noble, can justify <strong>the</strong> sacrifice <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

to <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> group. Vfuerever this occurs, it is <strong>the</strong><br />

starkest tragedy, hardly less so if <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual consents (because<br />

he accepts <strong>the</strong> ideology) to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>strumental use <strong>of</strong> himself ••••<br />

Sometimes <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t is pushed to <strong>the</strong> virtual denial <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuality:<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce we arise <strong>in</strong> society, it is assumed with a ferocious<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ism that we can never transcend it. A1lsuch concepts are<br />

useful correctives <strong>of</strong> an earlier solipsism. But if <strong>the</strong>y are extended<br />

to hold that conformity w'ith society is not only a necessity<br />

but also a duty, <strong>the</strong>y dest~oy that marg<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> freedom whioh<br />

gives life its savour and its endless possibility for advance. 51<br />

In def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g her characters <strong>in</strong> moral t~s, stress<strong>in</strong>g relationship<br />

as opposed to identity, <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong> effectively limits <strong>the</strong> "marg<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

freedom" that Riesman is tal1i:<strong>in</strong>g about. Her characters undoubtedly<br />

accept <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>strumental use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves. They def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>mselves, choose<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own lives, as Jerome Thale puts it, 52 <strong>in</strong> ways that are <strong>in</strong> conformity<br />

with an idea <strong>of</strong> universal, social good. Hence <strong>the</strong> three women,<br />

Romola, Doro<strong>the</strong>a, and Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e, can f<strong>in</strong>d no greater area <strong>of</strong> selfdef<strong>in</strong>ition<br />

than <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> quiet domestic ','Jorld <strong>of</strong> car<strong>in</strong>g for o<strong>the</strong>rs and<br />

especially for children. They are not constra<strong>in</strong>ed by social pressures
