spones. Psychoanalytic critics have mooted ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong>'s relationship<br />

with her bro<strong>the</strong>r, Isaac Evans, 37 or have seen Maggie's<br />

supreme moral victory as ra<strong>the</strong>r an <strong>in</strong>stance <strong>of</strong> an immature dependence<br />

and a "neurotic strategy. II 38 Fem<strong>in</strong>ist critics have likewise objected to<br />

<strong>the</strong> masochism 39 <strong>of</strong> <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong>'s treatment <strong>of</strong> Maggie expressed <strong>in</strong> such<br />

statements as "she had made up her m<strong>in</strong>d to suffer. II 40 These critical<br />

<strong>the</strong>ories all endeavour to expla<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> reason for <strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong>'s treatment<br />

<strong>of</strong> Maggie and as such are not susceptible <strong>of</strong> pro<strong>of</strong>. I am <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong>'s solution for Maggie and detect that she herself is uneasy.<br />

I am not deny<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> validity with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> novel <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>George</strong> <strong>Eliot</strong>'s trenchant comment that "our deeds determ<strong>in</strong>e us, as much<br />

as we determ<strong>in</strong>e our deeds" 45 applies as forcibly to Maggie as it does<br />

to Arthur. Maggie is as much a victim <strong>of</strong> a determ<strong>in</strong>istic and mechanistic<br />

world view as <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r characters I have been st~dy<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

I have shown that a habit whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> fear or <strong>of</strong> renunciation is<br />
