The continued dominance <strong>of</strong> oil dem<strong>and</strong> in the transport sector in the OECD countries reflects<br />

the higher level <strong>of</strong> motor vehicle ownership <strong>and</strong> per capita income (Figure 3). While a<br />

description <strong>of</strong> transport trends in non-OECD countries, particularly in Asia, is not an easy task<br />

for two reasons. First, these are rather a constellation <strong>of</strong> highly diverse countries. Second,<br />

transport statistics on tonne- <strong>and</strong> passenger-kilometres are generally less than adequate. One way<br />

<strong>of</strong> exemplifying the heterogeneity <strong>of</strong> countries in Asia is to study the varying degrees <strong>of</strong> growth<br />

in ownership <strong>of</strong> motor vehicles (Figure 3) (Dargay <strong>and</strong> Gately, 1999).<br />
