Transport<br />

• 10% <strong>of</strong> the autorickshaws will be battery operated from 2001<strong>and</strong> the share would increase to<br />

17% in 2011,<br />

• 5% <strong>of</strong> cars will be on CNG from 2001 <strong>and</strong> its share would increase to 12% in 2011, <strong>and</strong><br />

• 3% <strong>of</strong> taxis will run on CNG from 2001 <strong>and</strong> its share would increase to 6% in 2011.<br />

Improved technology (IT)<br />

Half <strong>of</strong> the total travel dem<strong>and</strong> by two-wheelers will have four-stroke engines in 2001 compared<br />

to about 7% today. In 2011, the two-stroke technology will be completely phased out <strong>and</strong> 100%<br />

<strong>of</strong> the two-wheelers will have four-stroke engines. Here also government has no clear cut time<br />

bound programme for phasing out <strong>of</strong> two stroke engines. Recently, government has reportedly<br />

taken a decision not to register 2-stroke vehicles in the National Capital Region w.e.f 1 st April<br />

2000.<br />

Inspection <strong>and</strong> maintenance (IM)<br />

Periodic inspection <strong>and</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> in-use vehicles will improve the overall engine efficiency<br />

along with reduction in tailpipe exhaust emissions from 2001. But, in absence <strong>of</strong> any data on fuel<br />

efficiency improvement across different range <strong>of</strong> vehicles due to inspection <strong>and</strong> maintenance, it<br />

is assumed that there would be a fuel saving <strong>of</strong> about 10%.<br />
