2. How to use this document<br />

2.1 Qualifications, Procedures, And Products<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>City</strong> In<strong>for</strong>mation Technology Service Department’s cable standards document is divided into the<br />

following major sections with subsections providing detail.<br />

2.2 Standards<br />

Where this document conflicts with published standards, BICSI manuals, or industry best practices,<br />

this document will prevail.<br />

Deviations from the standards described in this document must be approved by the ITSD<br />

Communications Manager or designated point <strong>of</strong> contact prior to installation.<br />

A request <strong>for</strong> deviation must be submitted in writing and include drawings, part numbers, cut sheets,<br />

and a valid reason <strong>for</strong> deviating from the standard.<br />

2.3 Changes<br />

Recommendations or suggestions <strong>for</strong> changes are invited and must be submitted as a request <strong>for</strong><br />

deviation.<br />

2.4 Regulatory and Other Requirements<br />

a) All in<strong>for</strong>mation in this document is intended to con<strong>for</strong>m to the National Electrical Safety Code<br />

(ANSI/IEEE C2) and National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70). Installers should always follow the<br />

NESC, NEC, applicable state and local codes, manufacturer’s instructions, and contract documents<br />

when installing telecommunications cabling.<br />

b) Only qualified persons familiar with telecommunications cabling should per<strong>for</strong>m the work described<br />

in this document. It is recommended that all work be per<strong>for</strong>med in accordance with NFPA 70E,<br />

Standard <strong>for</strong> the Electrical Safety in the Workplace.<br />

c) General requirements <strong>for</strong> installing electrical products and systems are described in the latest version<br />

<strong>of</strong> NECA 1, Standard Practices <strong>for</strong> Good Workmanship in Electrical Contracting (ANSI). Other NEIS<br />

provide additional guidance <strong>for</strong> installing particular types <strong>of</strong> electrical products and systems. A<br />

complete list <strong>of</strong> NEIS is provided in Appendix D. <strong>The</strong> installation should follow the NEC, applicable<br />

state and local codes, and manufacturers’ instructions <strong>for</strong> the installation <strong>of</strong> electrical and<br />

telecommunications products and systems.<br />
