3. Qualifications<br />

3.1 Contractor<br />

Qualified cabling contractors must be a PCI, Panduit Certified Installation company and have a BICSI<br />

Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) on staff. BICSI Certified Technicians are<br />

preferred, but not mandatory.<br />

3.2 Technicians<br />

Cable technicians must be capable <strong>of</strong> working independently and serving as a “lead tech” with the<br />

following current certifications. Refer to the list <strong>of</strong> qualifications.<br />

Panduit Copper certification.<br />

Panduit Fiber certification.<br />

<strong>The</strong> duties and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> a cable technician include basic skills <strong>for</strong> the In<strong>for</strong>mation Transport<br />

Systems (a.k.a., telecom, voice & data, or structured cable) industry. Basic skills such as the ability to<br />

install and terminate copper and fiber optic cable; build out equipment rooms, closets and racks; setup<br />

configure and use copper and fiber optic test equipment; read and understand blue prints and related<br />

technical documentation; and per<strong>for</strong>m overall installations according to industry standards, best<br />

practices, and manufacturer specifications.<br />

<strong>The</strong> cable technician must be able to demonstrate and per<strong>for</strong>m the following:<br />

o Per<strong>for</strong>m Site Surveys<br />

- Use Construction Plans and specifications<br />

- Conduct visual site survey and inspections<br />

- Pull horizontal cable<br />

- In conduit<br />

- In open ceiling<br />

- Pull optical fiber optic cable<br />

- In innerduct<br />

o Build-out Equipment Rooms (Closets)<br />

- Determine equipment layouts<br />

- Mount/install backboards<br />

- Mount/install cross terminals<br />

- Mount/install racks & patch panels<br />

- Install optic fiber panels & hardware<br />

o Install Grounding Infrastructure<br />

- Know electrical codes<br />

- Know National Electric Code®<br />

o Termination<br />

- Complete IDC terminations (i.e., 66, 110)<br />

- Terminal blocks<br />

- Patch panels<br />

- RJ-45 connector<br />

o Connectors<br />

- Assemble and install<br />

- modular plugs (RJ-45)<br />

- Coaxial connectors<br />

- Crimp connectors<br />

- Optical fiber connectors<br />

ST, SC & LC<br />

- Demonstrate color codes (T-568A/B)<br />

o Testing<br />

- Copper Category 5e/6 certification using<br />

hand held test equipment (Fluke,<br />
