Code and Standards<br />

Landscape Design Considerations<br />

1. Screening and buffering <strong>of</strong> the site activities shall be in compliance<br />

with the materials, distances and guidelines specified in the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong> Unified Development Code (UDC).<br />

2. Landscape buffers and areas shall be planned to present a visually<br />

pleasing appearance.<br />

3. Materials which are native to the region and which are both droughtresistant<br />

and require low water use requirements are encouraged.<br />

4. Vegetation which will require low maintenance is preferred.<br />

5. Care should be taken to protect any existing vegetation which is<br />

surrounding the building that may be susceptible to damage during<br />

construction. Any vegetation which is damaged during construction<br />

shall be replaced.<br />

6. An automatic sprinkler system designed <strong>for</strong> water conservation is<br />

recommended.<br />

7. Consider the design <strong>of</strong> a nature trail, garden or other natural elements<br />

which may be utilized <strong>for</strong> instruction <strong>of</strong> the children in<br />

biology and other natural sciences.<br />

Fire Protection<br />

1. Fire protection systems shall be installed, repaired, operated and<br />

maintained in accordance with all applicable codes.<br />

2. Where required by code, an automatic sprinkler system shall be<br />

designed and installed in accordance with the IBC and all applicable<br />

codes.<br />

Structural Design Considerations<br />

1. A structural system which minimizes the use <strong>of</strong> interior columns<br />

and allows <strong>for</strong> large, open spaces that maximize interior flexibility<br />

and efficiency is preferred. This measure should be applied to the<br />

existing building renovation to the greatest extent feasible.<br />

2. View <strong>of</strong> the projection screen, whiteboard and / or teaching area<br />

shall not be obstructed in classrooms and teaching spaces by building<br />

structural elements. This measure should be applied to the<br />

existing building renovation to the greatest extent feasible.<br />

3. Where columns occur on classroom perimeter walls adjacent to<br />

corridor, furr out column(s) on the corridor side. This will allow <strong>for</strong><br />

maximum freedom within classrooms <strong>for</strong> furniture configuration,<br />

as well as provide designated areas on corridor walls <strong>for</strong> display <strong>of</strong><br />
