Not be made from heavy truck tires or tires with exposed steelbelted<br />

radials;<br />

Not be suspended from a composite structure or with other<br />

swings in the same bay;<br />

Have drainage holes drilled in the underside <strong>of</strong> the tire and<br />

maintained to facilitate water drainage; and<br />

Have a minimum clearance between the seating surface <strong>of</strong><br />

the tire swing and the uprights <strong>of</strong> the supporting structure <strong>of</strong><br />

30 inches or more when the tire is in a position closest to the<br />

support structure.<br />

35. A ‘use zone’ is the surface area under and around a piece <strong>of</strong> equipment<br />

onto which a child falling from or exiting the equipment would<br />

be expected to land. Other than the equipment itself, the use zone<br />

must be free <strong>of</strong> obstacles that a child could run into or fall on top<br />

<strong>of</strong> and be injured (§746.4801).<br />

36. <strong>The</strong> use zone <strong>for</strong> stationary equipment, excluding slides and s<strong>of</strong>t<br />

contained play equipment, must extend a minimum <strong>of</strong> six feet in<br />

all directions from the perimeter <strong>of</strong> the equipment. Use zones <strong>for</strong><br />

stationary equipment must not overlap other use zones (§746.4803).<br />

37. Measurements <strong>for</strong> use zones <strong>for</strong> slides (§746.4805), to-fro swings<br />

(§746.4807), tire swings (§746.4809) and rotating or rocking equipment<br />

(§746.4813) shall con<strong>for</strong>m to those requirements outlined in<br />

each section <strong>of</strong> the minimum standards.<br />

38. Loose-fill surfacing material or unitary surfacing material shall<br />

be provided in the use zones <strong>for</strong> all climbing, rocking, rotating,<br />

bouncing or moving equipment, slides and swings (§746.4901).<br />

<strong>The</strong> height <strong>of</strong> the highest designated play surface on the equipment<br />

will determine the depth <strong>of</strong> the loose materials or the attenuation<br />

rating (thickness) <strong>of</strong> the unitary materials.<br />

39. Acceptable loose-fill materials include, but are not limited to, loose<br />

particles such as sand, pea gravel, shredded wood products and<br />

shredded rubber (§746.4905).<br />

40. Loose-fill surfacing materials must be installed and maintained<br />

to a depth <strong>of</strong> at least six inches when height <strong>of</strong> highest designated<br />

play surface is five feet or less (§746.4907). Loose-fill surfacing<br />

material are <strong>for</strong> exterior use only and must not be installed over<br />

concrete or asphalt. All equipment support posts shall be marked<br />

to indicate the depth at which the loose-fill surfacing material must<br />

be maintained under equipment.<br />
