Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. This course will expose students<br />
to hand-on problem-solving as part <strong>of</strong> an interdisciplinary<br />
team. Students will do projects in conservation management in<br />
small groups working with other appropriate team members from<br />
outside the department and/or the community. Team members<br />
can include other scientists such as geologists and geographers or<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, land use planners, and curators.<br />

update participants in the classical aspects <strong>of</strong> botany. Topics will<br />
include: tissue culture, economic botany, microtechnique histology,<br />

series <strong>of</strong> lectures and demonstrations designed to expose students a<br />
basic background in the areas <strong>of</strong> cell and molecular biology using<br />
biochemical explanations when necessary. Topics will include cellular<br />
organelles and metabolism, biological macromolecules, construction<br />
and function <strong>of</strong> DNA, transcription and translation <strong>of</strong><br />
proteins.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. In-depth lectures and literature-based<br />
discussions on selected topics <strong>of</strong> current interest in<br />
biochemistry and physiology. Selected topics may include protein<br />
structure and function, metabolic pathways, regulation <strong>of</strong> enzyme<br />
activity, nucleic acids, endocrinology, osmoregulation and comparative<br />
