<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial.<br />

Transfer Students<br />

Transfer credits will be valid for degree completion if the course<br />

content matches the content and/or performances <strong>of</strong> a course in the<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Education and Human Development curriculum. In most<br />

cases, transfer credit will not be awarded for Tier III coursework.<br />

The College may require the validation <strong>of</strong> credits earned more than<br />

eight years prior to a candidate’s admission to the College in order<br />

to approve the transfer <strong>of</strong> credits into a degree program. Candidates<br />

transferring into the program should also note the provisions in the<br />

section, “Requirements for Student Teaching.”<br />

Honors Degree in Education<br />

An Honors Degree in Education is available to qualified majors and<br />

open (but not limited to) candidates enrolled in <strong>University</strong> Honors.<br />

The Honors Degree in Education is available for students majoring in<br />

Preschool, Elementary, Secondary Education, and Elementary Secondary<br />

Education.<br />

To graduate with Honors in Education, education majors must successfully<br />

complete the following:<br />

1. Fulfill the usual requirements for education majors.<br />

2. Maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 3.5 in<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional courses and 3.25 overall.<br />

3. Maintain a 3.25 grade-point average in teaching major.<br />

4. Establish an Honors Advisory Committee consisting <strong>of</strong> two College<br />

<strong>of</strong> Education and Human Development faculty members and<br />

one faculty member from the teaching major.<br />

5. Complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> three semester hours in course work<br />

approved by the Honors Advisory Committee.<br />

6. Complete successfully a six-hour Honors Thesis (Curriculum and<br />

Instruction 3999) approved by the Honors Advisory Committee.<br />

7. Perform satisfactorily in an oral examination <strong>of</strong> an honors thesis<br />

in education.<br />

Requirements for Bachelor’s Degree in Early<br />

Childhood Education<br />

Certification in Grades Pre-Kindergarten through Third<br />

The curriculum in Early Childhood education has five<br />

components:<br />

1. general education,<br />

2. focus area,<br />

3. knowledge <strong>of</strong> the learner and the learning environment,<br />

4. methodology and teaching, and<br />

5. special education.<br />

Education<br />

The curricula in secondary education have five components:<br />

4. methodology and teaching, and<br />

5. special education.<br />

Most programs <strong>of</strong> studies require a primary and secondary focus<br />

area. The primary focus area is the area for which certification is<br />

desired. The program <strong>of</strong> study includes sufficient coursework, in addition<br />

to the requirement to pass the PRAXIS examination in the primary<br />

focus area, to result in a certification award. The secondary focus<br />

area allows candidates to take a sufficient amount <strong>of</strong> coursework to<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Orleans</strong>/65
