FIN 4322G Money & Capital Markets<br />

Prerequisite: ECON 2221. The money and capital markets their composition<br />
regulation and operations; their influence in modern business;<br />
sources and uses <strong>of</strong> funds; commercial paper; acceptances;<br />
bank loans; call loans; negotiable certificates <strong>of</strong> deposit; investment<br />
banking and the Securities and Exchange Commission; the open<br />
market functions and activities <strong>of</strong> the Federal Reserve System.<br />
FIN 4354 Property & Liability Insurance<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: FIN 3355. A functional course in property and liability<br />
insurance including areas <strong>of</strong> underwriting, reinsurance, investment,<br />
financial statement analysis, mathematical concepts <strong>of</strong> ratemaking<br />
and reserves, types <strong>of</strong> insurance carriers, policy analysis,<br />
and government and social policy implications. Not for graduate<br />

FIN 4355 Life & Health Insurance<br />

Prerequisite: FIN 3355. Functions and uses <strong>of</strong> life and health insurance,<br />
contract analysis, legal aspects, mathematics <strong>of</strong> life and<br />
health insurance, selection and classification <strong>of</strong> life and health<br />
risks, industrial and other forms <strong>of</strong> life and health insurance, and<br />
business uses <strong>of</strong> life insurance. A significant part <strong>of</strong> the course is<br />
the role and uses <strong>of</strong> life insurance in personal financial planning.<br />

financial operations <strong>of</strong> the firm from an international point <strong>of</strong><br />
view. It draws upon topics such as exchange rate determination,<br />
foreign exchange exposures (risks) for the multinational firm and<br />
techniques to hedge such exposures, international bond, equity and<br />
currency markets, trade documentation, and international capital<br />
budgeting. Students may not receive graduate credit for both ECON<br />
4262, FIN 4362, and FIN 6367.<br />

FIN 4400 Fin Foundations for Managers<br />
3 cr.<br />
An approach to finance principles and practice intended for managerial<br />
use. Emphasis will be placed on applying finance principles<br />
in managerial decision-making as it concerns the investment,<br />
financing, and dividend decisions <strong>of</strong> business firms. Not open to<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Business undergraduate majors. This course may not be<br />
taken for graduate credit.<br />
FIN 4696 Washington Center Internship<br />
3-6 cr.<br />
The Washington, D.C. Internship Program is <strong>of</strong>fered in cooperation<br />
with the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars.<br />
Students <strong>of</strong> junior-level or higher standing and a grade-point<br />
average <strong>of</strong> 2.5 or better are eligible to participate in the Program.<br />
The program is conducted in Washington, D.C. and consists <strong>of</strong> an<br />
internship <strong>of</strong> four-and-a-half workdays per week, a three-hour<br />
course one night a week, and a major research paper. Participants<br />
can earn 12 credit hours during a fall or spring semester (nine<br />
hours in summer). Not for graduate credit.<br />
FIN 6300 Financial Administration<br />
3 cr.<br />
Offered each semester. Prerequisite: QMBE 2786 and 2787, or QMBE<br />
4400 and FIN 3300, or FIN 4400 and credit for or concurrent registration<br />
in ACCT 6130. Study <strong>of</strong> advanced principles and practices in<br />
the administration <strong>of</strong> the financial affairs <strong>of</strong> business enterprises.<br />
Emphasis is on efficient use <strong>of</strong> financial resources, evaluation <strong>of</strong><br />
investment project capital budgeting, and maintenance <strong>of</strong> creditworthiness.<br />
FIN 6301 Corporate Finance<br />
3 cr.<br />
(Students may not receive graduate credit for both FIN 4301 and<br />
FIN 6301) Prerequisites: QMBE 2786 and 2787, or QMBE 4400 and FIN<br />
3300, or FIN 4400 and credit for or concurrent registration in ACCT<br />
6130.The course provides a comprehensive overview from managerial<br />
perspective <strong>of</strong> such topics as theory <strong>of</strong> uncertainty, valuations<br />
(including warrants and convertibles), advanced capital structure<br />
theory and cost <strong>of</strong> capital, dividend theory, mergers, restructuring<br />
and corporate control, agency theory, and applied issues in corporate<br />
finance (including leasing, leveraged buyouts, and interest<br />
rate swaps).<br />
FIN 6302 Investments<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: FIN 6300 or 6301. The course provides an analysis <strong>of</strong><br />
such topics as portfolio theory, capital asset pricing models, Arbitrage<br />
Pricing Theory, efficient capital market theory, option pricing<br />
theory, futures contracts and markets, and the securities market.<br />
FIN 6303 Financial Markets & Inst<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: FIN 6300 or 6301. An overview <strong>of</strong> the processes at work<br />
within the financial system, its major participants, its procedures<br />
for assessing and pricing risk, and its role in the allocation <strong>of</strong> credit<br />
to different financial sectors.<br />
FIN 6309 International Financial Mgmt<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: FIN 6300 or 6301 or enrollment in the Master <strong>of</strong> Science<br />
program in Accounting. Geared for the MBA or other graduate<br />
students interested in a graduate level course emphasizing the<br />
managerial aspects <strong>of</strong> international finance. Students enrolled in<br />
the Ph.D. program in Financial Economics cannot use this course<br />
in their graduate program <strong>of</strong> study, and no students will receive<br />
graduate credit for both ECON 4262/FIN 4362 and Finance 6309.<br />
FIN 6311 Theory <strong>of</strong> Corporate Finance<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: Must be a Ph.D. in Financial Economics Student. The<br />
course is intended to provide students with a strong foundation<br />
for understanding the theoretical and empirical concepts in modern<br />
