Health Promotion<br />
EDHS 1110 Personal Health & Wellness<br />
3 cr.<br />
A survey <strong>of</strong> content areas that affect the overall health <strong>of</strong> the<br />
individual, with particular emphasis on health promotion (wellness),<br />
decision-making, and health behavior. Content areas include<br />
emotional health, sexuality, nutrition, exercise, weight control,<br />
environmental health, chronic diseases, consumerism, aging, death,<br />
and dying.<br />
EDHS 1401 Medical Terminology I<br />
3 cr.<br />
Introduces students to the basics <strong>of</strong> medical terminology, the root<br />
<strong>of</strong> all diagnostic and coding reporting. Teaches students anatomy<br />
and physiology and disease pathology <strong>of</strong> the following systems:<br />
digestive, urinary, female reproductive, male reproductive, nervous<br />
and cardiovascular. Emphasis is placed on the medical terminology<br />
using prefixes, suffixes, roots, and combining forms.<br />
EDHS 1402 Medical Terminology II<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: EDHS 1401 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Continues<br />
instruction in the basics <strong>of</strong> medical terminology, the root <strong>of</strong> all<br />
diagnostic and coding reporting. Teaches students basic anatomy<br />
and physiology and disease pathology <strong>of</strong> the following systems:<br />
cardiovascular, respiratory, blood, lymphatic, immune, musculoskeletal,<br />
skin, eye, ear, and endocrine. It also covers pharmacology,<br />
psychiatry, oncology, radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiation<br />
therapy. Emphasis is placed on the medical terminology using prefixes,<br />
suffixes, roots, and combining forms.<br />
EDHS 1420 Intro to Health Care Industry<br />
3 cr.<br />
A survey <strong>of</strong> the American health care industry which includes<br />
managed care organizations, history, and present use <strong>of</strong> medical<br />
coding for reimbursement and health care tracking, health care<br />
insurance and other third-party payers, health care providers and<br />
current business, governmental influence over the health care<br />
industry, and <strong>of</strong>fice administration.<br />
EDHS 2000 Coord School Hlth & Wlns: Sec<br />
3 cr.<br />
This course raises the awareness <strong>of</strong> teacher candidates to the<br />
health and wellness issues and behaviors impacting adolescents by<br />
examining the interrelationships among the physical, mental, emotional,<br />
spiritual, and social dimensions <strong>of</strong> health and wellness. The<br />
coordinated approach to school health and wellness employs all<br />
aspects <strong>of</strong> the school and community (students, teachers, administrators,<br />
staff, local businesses and residents) to foster a healthy<br />
environment. Teacher candidates will develop the ability to integrate<br />
health and wellness content across the curriculum in order<br />
to positively impact secondary students’ health-related knowledge,<br />
attitudes, and behaviors.<br />
EDHS 2111 Intro to Health Promotion<br />
3 cr.<br />
This course will examine the historical precedent <strong>of</strong> health education<br />
and health promotion as well as the background theoretical<br />
frameworks and models for improving health through behavior<br />
change. It will also focus on application <strong>of</strong> these theoretical frameworks<br />
and models. In addition, the seven responsibility areas and<br />
four practice areas <strong>of</strong> the CHES framework will be discussed. Evolving<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional roles and ethical considerations are also included.<br />
EDHS 2401 Diagnostic Coding I<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: EDHS 1401 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Introduces the<br />
concepts <strong>of</strong> numeric classification <strong>of</strong> disease and trauma. Begins<br />
the instruction in diagnostic coding techniques utilized by all<br />
health care practitioners, reimbursement, and tracking administrators.<br />
The primary focus is to use the ICD-coding texts in conjunction<br />
with knowledge <strong>of</strong> the medical terminology to code relatively<br />
simple examples <strong>of</strong> insurance claims. Also included are lectures<br />
covering governmental and third-party rules and regulations.<br />
EDHS 2402 Diagnostic Coding II<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: EDHS 1401, 1402, 2401, or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Continues<br />
instruction in the concepts <strong>of</strong> numeric classification <strong>of</strong> disease<br />
and trauma. Covers classifications <strong>of</strong> specific disease processes<br />
and trauma. Students are introduced to how and when to use five<br />
digit codes, how to sequence diagnoses and the fundamentals <strong>of</strong><br />
the “linking processes” between ICD-CM and CPT codes. Also teaches<br />
students to identify complications and comorbidity for coding purposes.<br />
Emphasis will be placed on coding more complicated claims,<br />
i.e., operating room reports, transplant reports, c-section reports.<br />
EDHS 2403 Procedural Coding I<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: EDHS 2401 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Introduces students<br />
to the three levels <strong>of</strong> current procedural terminology coding<br />
necessary for proper tracking <strong>of</strong> health care methodologies and<br />
reimbursement. A special emphasis is placed on the detail required<br />
in the medical record to properly code health care procedures. Covers<br />
medical codes for the following: evaluation and management,<br />
anesthesia, and surgery.<br />
EDHS 2404 Procedural Coding II<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: EDHS 2403 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Continues<br />
instruction in the numeric classification <strong>of</strong> procedural coding.<br />
Teaches sequencing <strong>of</strong> HCPCS codes Levels I and II. Course covers<br />
the following systems: digestive, urinary, male/female genital,<br />
endocrine, nervous, eye and ear. Additionally, medicine, radiology,<br />
and pathology are discussed. Specialty billing codes such as drug,<br />
durable equipment, ambulance provider, etc., are presented.<br />
EDHS 2410 Medical Office Management<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: EDHS 1420. Teaches those medical <strong>of</strong>fice management<br />
systems necessary for a successful medical practice. Covers<br />
accounting processes, strategies for maintaining good patient relations,<br />
record keeping and methodologies, importance <strong>of</strong> good reception<br />
techniques, pre-certification and utilization review procedures,<br />
and handling <strong>of</strong> medical records. Knowledge and use <strong>of</strong> various<br />
<strong>of</strong>fice forms, as well as differences between manual and computerized<br />
billing systems are included.<br />
EDHS 2411 Medical Records Management<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: EDHS 1420. Teaches the importance <strong>of</strong> medical records.<br />
It begins with the definitions and descriptions <strong>of</strong> the various types<br />
<strong>of</strong> documents considered to be medical records; continues with<br />
instructions on how to file, store, retrieve, view, retain, and manage<br />
medical records. Also teachers governmental and other third-party<br />
rules and regulations governing the management and handling <strong>of</strong><br />
medical records.<br />
EDHS 2420 Legal Aspects Medical Coding<br />
3 cr.<br />
Provides general information about the structure and function <strong>of</strong><br />
the American legal system and its relationship to the health care<br />
industry. Teaches the rules and regulations surrounding “fraud”<br />
and “abuse” as currently defined in the health care industry. It also<br />
provides information concerning medical <strong>of</strong>fice accounting procedures<br />
for billing, bad debt, insurance handling, and other monetary<br />
regulations. Also teaches students how to pr<strong>of</strong>essionally instruct<br />
their supervisors to provide proper coding documentation.<br />
