POLI 6885 Sem in International Conflict<br />

3 cr.<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to analyze the most important theories<br />

regarding the causes <strong>of</strong> international war and conflict. It will<br />

introduce students to a wide range <strong>of</strong> research on international<br />

conflict. Topics may include polarity, power transition theory, hegemony,<br />

arms races, alliances, deterrence theory, diversionary theories,<br />

regime types, rivalry, civil wars, the escalation and diffusion<br />

<strong>of</strong> wars, and trade and military conflict.<br />

POLI 6990 Independent Research<br />

3 cr.<br />

Independent research in the graduate student’s area <strong>of</strong> specialization,<br />

under the direction <strong>of</strong> a designated member <strong>of</strong> the graduate<br />

faculty.<br />

POLI 7000 Thesis Research<br />

3 cr.<br />

Offered each semester. Prerequisites: PSYC 1000 or 2200 and MATH<br />

1115. Frequency distributions, measures <strong>of</strong> central tendency and<br />

dispersion, correlation, discrete and continuous probability functions,<br />

tests <strong>of</strong> significance including t and chi-square. Introduction<br />

to analysis <strong>of</strong> variance, regression, and non-parametric tests <strong>of</strong><br />

significance. Two hours <strong>of</strong> lecture and two hours <strong>of</strong> laboratory.<br />

PSYC 1500 Personal Adjustment<br />

Offered each semester. The psychology <strong>of</strong> daily living with emphasis<br />

on identification and coping with the stressors <strong>of</strong> life. Topics<br />

include personality, stress and anxiety, interpersonal relationships,<br />

Offered each semester. Aspects <strong>of</strong> human sexuality including behavior,<br />

anatomy, physiology, cross-cultural comparisons, and historical<br />

Offered each semester. Prerequisite: PSYC 1310 or a first course in<br />

statistics. Introduction to scientific method, experimental and statistical<br />

design, scientific writing, and psychophysical and psychological<br />

research methodology. Two hours <strong>of</strong> lecture and two hours<br />

<strong>of</strong> laboratory.<br />

PSYC 2320 Introduction to Biopsychology<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: PSYC 1000 or BIOS 1083 or BIOS 1303. The study <strong>of</strong> the<br />

brain and nervous system, sensory processing, movement, development,<br />

sleep and arousal, motivation, emotion, learning, memory,<br />

cognitive function, and language.<br />

PSYC 2340 Motivation & Emotion<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: PSYC 1000. Survey <strong>of</strong> classes <strong>of</strong> behavior seen in<br />

human and infra-human forms, including general activity and<br />

exploration, consummatory behavior, aggression, social affiliation,<br />

social approval, achievement, and goal-setting behavior; discussion<br />

<strong>of</strong> concepts <strong>of</strong> instinct, drive, habit, reinforcement, expectancy, and<br />

incentive.<br />

PSYC 2380 Psychology <strong>of</strong> Cognition<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: PSYC 1000 or 2200. The study <strong>of</strong> concept formation,<br />

problem-solving, understanding, and language with emphasis on<br />

the development there<strong>of</strong>; theory, research, and application.<br />

PSYC 2400 Social Psychology<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: three hours <strong>of</strong> psychology or sociology. Survey <strong>of</strong> the<br />

cultural forces as they affect attitudes, social learning, perception,<br />

and communication <strong>of</strong> the individual and the group.<br />

PSYC 3090 Ind Reading & Resrch in Psyc<br />

1-6 cr.<br />

Offered each semester. Prerequisite: PSYC 2300 and consent <strong>of</strong><br />

department. The individual student is responsible for the selection<br />

<strong>of</strong> the area <strong>of</strong> reading or research. May be repeated for a total <strong>of</strong><br />

six semester hours credit. Section number will correspond with<br />

credit to be earned.<br />

PSYC 3095 Fld Exp in Applied Psychology<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: Psychology 2300 completion <strong>of</strong> a 4000-level content<br />

course in an area relevant to the proposed field experience, and<br />

consent <strong>of</strong> department. Students will be placed in an agency or<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice setting which has been approved by the appropriate departmental<br />

committee, to gain supervised experience in the applications<br />

<strong>of</strong> psychology in field settings. Students usually work eight<br />

hours a week at times mutually agreeable to the individual and<br />

the applied setting. In addition, students must meet regularly with<br />

the faculty supervisor, and the student’s work must be evaluated<br />

by both the faculty supervisor and the site supervisor. May be<br />

repeated once for credit.<br />

PSYC 3099 Senior Honors Thesis<br />

1-6 cr.<br />

Offered each semester. Prerequisite: PSYC 2300, consent <strong>of</strong> department,<br />

consent <strong>of</strong> director <strong>of</strong> the Honors Program, and grade point<br />

averages <strong>of</strong> at least 3.5 in psychology and 3.25 overall. Senior honors<br />

thesis research in psychology under the direction <strong>of</strong> a faculty<br />

member. Students may earn up to a total <strong>of</strong> six credits.<br />
