Program <strong>of</strong> Study<br />
The program begins with an intensive 9-semester-hour block <strong>of</strong><br />
coursework and field activities in the summer. During the initial year<br />
<strong>of</strong> teaching, candidates enroll in 3 semester hours <strong>of</strong> course-work during<br />
both the fall and spring semesters. Concurrently, candidates enroll<br />
in 3 semester hours <strong>of</strong> internship during each semester. Additional<br />
coursework and internship may be prescribed based on candidate performance.<br />

Field Experience Requirements<br />
Throughout the program, candidates complete field activities in<br />
school and classroom settings. Field work is supported through enrollment<br />
in an internship taken during the fall and spring semesters during<br />
the first year <strong>of</strong> teaching. Candidates meet in cohort groups to<br />
receive support on field activity completion and evaluation. Candidates<br />
must successfully pass assessment requirements to advance from<br />
the summer portion <strong>of</strong> the program to the fall semester and from the<br />
fall portion <strong>of</strong> the program to the spring semester. More information<br />

Requirements for Completing Program<br />
All certification programs in the College <strong>of</strong> Education and Human<br />
Development are performance-based. Candidates develop a pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
portfolio to document their ability to demonstrate knowledge, skills,<br />
and dispositions associated with effective teaching. Completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
program <strong>of</strong> study requires successful performance in both coursework<br />

Louisiana Teacher Certification<br />
Candidates who successfully complete all program requirements are<br />
recommended to the Louisiana Department <strong>of</strong> Education for certification<br />
award. All conditions listed above under “Louisiana Teacher Certification”<br />
must be satisfied. Candidates enrolled in this program receive<br />
a Provisional Teaching Certificate during their program <strong>of</strong> study.<br />
Continuation <strong>of</strong> Program <strong>of</strong> Study to Receive a Masters Degree<br />
Dependent on performance, candidates may apply a portion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
coursework completed for certification toward a Masters <strong>of</strong> Education<br />

PRAXIS Requirements<br />
All candidates pursuing initial teaching certification must successfully<br />
pass three types <strong>of</strong> PRAXIS examinations prior to program completion<br />
and recommendation for certification. The point in time that the<br />
candidate takes each examination varies according to the certification<br />
program option pursued. The following describes when each PRAXIS<br />
test is taken:<br />
PRAXIS I PPST<br />
Undergraduate Program: Prior to Admission to Tier III<br />
(Teacher Education Program)<br />
Non-Degree Certification Only: Must be passed prior to admission<br />
to the program Practitioner Program: Must be passed prior to<br />
admission to the program.<br />
PRAXIS II<br />
Content Area Undergraduate Program: Taken prior to Tier IV<br />
(Student Teaching)<br />
Must be passed prior to graduation Non-Degree Certification Only:<br />
Must be passed prior to admission to the program Practitioner Program:<br />
Must be passed prior to admission to the program.<br />
PRAXIS II<br />
Principles <strong>of</strong> Learning & Teaching<br />
Undergraduate Program: Must be passed prior to graduation Non-<br />
Degree Certification Only: Must be passed prior to completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
program Practitioner Program: Must be passed prior to completion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the program.<br />
Add-On Certification Option<br />
The College <strong>of</strong> Education and Human Development <strong>of</strong>fers several<br />
programs <strong>of</strong> study that result in an additional area <strong>of</strong> certification.<br />
These programs are designed for candidates who already hold a current<br />
