ENGL 181 Elementary Intensive ESL<br />

6 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: ESL Placement Test. An intensive elementary-level<br />

course for students whose native language is not English. Thirteen<br />

class hours per week. ENGL 0181-0182 may not be counted for fulfillment<br />

<strong>of</strong> degree requirements.<br />

ENGL 182 Elementary Intensive ESL<br />

3 -12 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: ESL Placement Test. An intensive elementary-level<br />

course for students whose native language is not English. Thirteen<br />

counted for fulfillment <strong>of</strong> degree requirements.<br />

ENGL 186 Advanced Intensive ESL 1<br />

2 cr.<br />

ESL Placement Test or completion <strong>of</strong> 0183-0184. An intensive<br />

advanced level course for students whose native language is not<br />

English. Thirteen class hours per week. ENGL 0185-0186 may not be<br />

counted for fulfillment <strong>of</strong> degree requirements.<br />

ENGL 187 Semi-Intensive ESL<br />

6 cr.<br />

ESL Placement Test or completion <strong>of</strong> 0186. A semi-intensive course<br />

for students whose native language is not English. Six class hours<br />

per week. ENGL 0187 may not be counted for fulfillment <strong>of</strong> degree<br />

requirements.<br />

ENGL 188 English as a Second Language<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: ESL Placement Test or completion <strong>of</strong> ENGL 0185-0186.<br />

A composition course designed for students whose native language<br />

is not English. Upon completion <strong>of</strong> ENGL 0188, a student may go on<br />

to ENGL 0189 or a higher course in some cases; upon completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> ENGL 0189, a student may go on to ENGL 0150, 1157, 1158, or 1159,<br />

depending upon his or her degree <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in composition.<br />

Neither ENGL 0188 nor ENGL 0189 may be counted for fulfillment<br />

<strong>of</strong> degree requirements.<br />

ENGL 189 English as a Second Language<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: ESL Placement Test or completion <strong>of</strong> ENGL 0185-0186.<br />

A composition course designed for students whose native language<br />

is not English. Upon completion <strong>of</strong> ENGL 0188, a student may go on<br />

to ENGL 0189 or a higher course in some cases; upon completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> ENGL 0189, a student may go on to ENGL 0150, 1157, 1158, or 1159<br />

depending upon his or her degree <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in composition.<br />

Neither ENGL 0188 nor ENGL 0189 may be counted for fulfillment<br />

<strong>of</strong> degree requirements.<br />

ENGL 191 Effect Speaking for Intl Grads<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: Placement by ESL Placement Test or by English Department.<br />

A non-intensive course in speaking designed specifically<br />

for graduate students whose first language is not English. Special<br />

emphasis is given to academic presentation skills, pronunciation,<br />

and nonverbal communication.<br />

ENGL 192 Effect Writing for Intl Grads<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: Placement by ESL Placement Test or English Department.<br />

A non-intensive course in report writing designed specifically<br />

for graduate students whose first language is not English.<br />

Special emphasis is given to writing problem-solution texts, data<br />

commentaries, summaries, critiques, and research papers.<br />

ENGL 230 Reading Improvement<br />

3 cr.<br />

Designed to train students in college-level reading. The entire reading<br />

process will be explored and applied through group interaction<br />

and individualized reading instruction. Three hours <strong>of</strong> lecture and<br />

one hour <strong>of</strong> laboratory work per week will be required. ENGL 0230<br />

may not be counted for fulfillment <strong>of</strong> degree requirements. NOTE:<br />

This course will be required <strong>of</strong> certain students on the basis <strong>of</strong> the<br />

ACT test and additional reading tests. It is also available as an elective<br />

to all students.<br />

ENGL 1156 English Composition<br />

3 cr.<br />

Each course <strong>of</strong>fered each semester. An introductory sequence <strong>of</strong><br />

writing courses. On the basis <strong>of</strong> the UNO Placement Test or previous<br />

college English (if any), students will be grouped and required<br />

to take one, two, or three semesters <strong>of</strong> freshman composition. The<br />

required courses must be taken progressively, but in cases <strong>of</strong> exceptional<br />

progress, students completing 1156 may be permitted to skip<br />

1157; such students are eligible for by-pass credit in English 1157<br />

provided they earn a C or better in 1158. Students who enter 1158 or<br />

1159 initially thus take only one semester <strong>of</strong> freshman composition<br />

and may proceed without delay to any 2000-level course for which<br />

they have the necessary prerequisites. (1159 is the honors section <strong>of</strong><br />

1158.) In order to receive credit for 1158, students must pass a pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />

examination at the end <strong>of</strong> the semester. NOTE: Students may<br />

use up to 6 hours <strong>of</strong> composition credit towards their degrees.<br />

ENGL 1157 English Composition<br />

3 cr.<br />

Each course <strong>of</strong>fered each semester. An introductory course in writing<br />

largely expository accompanied by selected readings. ENGL<br />

0150 may not be counted for fulfillment <strong>of</strong> degree requirements.<br />

NOTE: On the basis <strong>of</strong> the UNO Placement Test or previous college<br />

English (if any) students will be grouped and required to take<br />

one two or three semesters <strong>of</strong> freshman composition. The required<br />

courses must be taken progressively but in rare cases <strong>of</strong> exceptional<br />

progress students completing 0150 may be permitted to skip<br />
