MUS 4950 Opera Theater<br />
1 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. A workshop course especially<br />
designed for the coordination <strong>of</strong> music and acting with particular<br />
emphasis on training the singing actor. Coaching in operatic scenes<br />
and training in the basic principles <strong>of</strong> dramatic aspects <strong>of</strong> opera. In<br />
addition to participation in the ensemble, extra duties <strong>of</strong> a responsible<br />
nature will be assigned. A maximum <strong>of</strong> three hours credit in<br />
ensembles may be applied toward a graduate degree.<br />

MUS 6010 Musical Overview Arts Administ<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: admission to the M.A. administration program or consent<br />
<strong>of</strong> department. Not for credit toward a graduate degree in<br />
music. A nonintensive survey <strong>of</strong> music history with emphasis on<br />
formation <strong>of</strong> the current concert, opera, and ballet repertory, and<br />
an examination <strong>of</strong> the various artistic and economic aspects <strong>of</strong> the<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional presentation <strong>of</strong> this repertory in public performance.<br />
MUS 6100 Graduate Theory in Performance<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: MUS 4101 and 4102 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. This<br />
course is designed to demonstrate practical usage <strong>of</strong> theoretical<br />
ideas in musical performance.<br />

and methods with an emphasis on college-level instruction.<br />
MUS 6105 18th Cent Polyphonic Technique<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: MUS 4101 or equivalent. A detailed study <strong>of</strong> specific<br />
polyphonic techniques.<br />
MUS 6111 Seminar Choral Conducting<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: Consent <strong>of</strong> department and MUS 3111 - 3112 or equivalent.<br />
An advanced course in the interpretation <strong>of</strong> choral literature<br />
with special attention given to conducting technique, rehearsal<br />
problems and their solutions, and score preparation. Laboratory<br />
experience will be provided. May be repeated once for credit by<br />
students with choral conducting emphasis.<br />
MUS 6112 Seminar Instrumental Conduct<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: Consent <strong>of</strong> department and MUS 3111 - 3112 or equivalent.<br />
An advanced course in the interpretation <strong>of</strong> instrumental<br />
literature with special attention given to conducting technique,<br />
rehearsal problems and their solutions, and score preparation.<br />
Laboratory experience will be provided. May be repeated once for<br />
credit by students with instrumental conducting emphasis.<br />
MUS 6191 Seminar in Music Theory<br />

study <strong>of</strong> a limited aspect <strong>of</strong> music theory through guided research<br />
and presentation <strong>of</strong> findings. Topic will vary from semester to<br />

MUS 6200 Music Research Methods & Mater<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: Consent <strong>of</strong> department. This is a writing-intensive<br />
course designed to help graduate students develop skills in music<br />
research and in the various forms and styles <strong>of</strong> academic and pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
writing in music. The major goal <strong>of</strong> this course is to prepare<br />
students for the intellectual challenges <strong>of</strong> graduate academic<br />
work, including research papers and comprehensive examinations,<br />
and for the pr<strong>of</strong>essional music market and industry. Students will<br />
explore the various print and electronic music research resources<br />
and engage in numerous writing and research projects.<br />
MUS 6291 Seminar in Music History<br />

An intensive study <strong>of</strong> a limited aspect <strong>of</strong> music history through<br />
guided individual research and presentation <strong>of</strong> findings. Topic will<br />

MUS 6292 Music in 20th Century America<br />
3 cr.<br />
This course addresses the growth <strong>of</strong> European Classical music,<br />
jazz, and the rise <strong>of</strong> popular music in the United States from the<br />
era <strong>of</strong> Caruso and Toscanini through the techno-rap <strong>of</strong> the 1990s.<br />
Particular attention is paid to the manner in which 20th century<br />
American culture has shaped attitudes about music: how radio, the<br />
phonograph, television and the internet have influenced the music<br />
that Americans heard, and how these developments have altered<br />
their understanding <strong>of</strong> music during the 20th century. Intended for<br />
both Classical and Jazz Division graduate students; Others admitted<br />
with the permission <strong>of</strong> the department. No prerequisites.<br />
MUS 6300 Seminar in Jazz History<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: MUS 2205 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. A focused study <strong>of</strong><br />
the music <strong>of</strong> a single contributor or related group <strong>of</strong> contributors<br />
selected from the major innovators in jazz history. Topic will vary<br />
from semester to semester.<br />

study <strong>of</strong> jazz research materials and methodology with an emphasis<br />

focusing on a selected topic in choral music through guided<br />
