the avant-garde, <strong>of</strong> the primitive in art, and <strong>of</strong> abstraction.<br />
FA 4266 Modernism At Midcentury<br />

Prerequisite: FA 2202, 4265 or consent <strong>of</strong> instructor. Developments in<br />
painting and sculpture in Europe and the Unites States from 1920<br />
to 1960. Attention will be given to major styles and movements<br />
(including Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Art Informel, Neo<br />
Dada), to individual artists and artworks, and to the instrumental<br />
roles <strong>of</strong> the historian, the critic, the curator, the marketplace, and<br />
political events in shaping late modern art.<br />

Prerequisite: admission to the M.A. administration program or<br />
consent <strong>of</strong> department. An overview <strong>of</strong> the field <strong>of</strong> visual arts.<br />
This introduction to the visual arts will include the terminology<br />
and criteria for aesthetic evaluation, the materials and processes<br />
<strong>of</strong> painting, sculpture, graphic arts, and architecture, an historical<br />
survey, and consideration <strong>of</strong> management principles and practices<br />
appropriate to the visual arts. Lectures will be supplemented by<br />
visits to local galleries and museums. Intended as a distributive<br />
component in the M.A. administration program, this course may<br />
not be taken for graduate credit toward the M.F.A. in Fine Arts.<br />
