EDGC 6430 Counseling Techniques<br />
3 cr.<br />
An analysis <strong>of</strong> the theory, dynamics, and practice <strong>of</strong> counseling<br />
clients. Lab experience required.<br />
EDGC 6435 Substance Abuse Counseling<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: EDGC 6400, 6430 and admission to a degree program<br />
or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Theories and techniques <strong>of</strong> counseling<br />
substance abusing clients, as well as an examination <strong>of</strong> the<br />
physiological and psychological aspects <strong>of</strong> substance abuse, will be<br />
covered in this course designed for students in counseling related<br />
fields. The course will also include practice in various counseling<br />
techniques utilized in the treatment <strong>of</strong> alcohol and drug abusing<br />
clients.<br />
EDGC 6439 Advanced Counseling Theory<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: admission to degree program or consent <strong>of</strong> the department.<br />
This course provides advanced instruction in the major<br />
counseling theories introduced in EDGC 6400. Students examine the<br />
original works <strong>of</strong> major theorists and develop pr<strong>of</strong>essional expertise<br />
in several approaches to the practice <strong>of</strong> counseling.<br />
EDGC 6440 Advanced Counseling Techniques<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: EDGC 6400, 6430 and admission to a degree program<br />
or consent <strong>of</strong> department. This course includes an experiential<br />
approach to the development <strong>of</strong> counseling skills and the conceptualization<br />
<strong>of</strong> client concerns. The application <strong>of</strong> principles and<br />
techniques <strong>of</strong> major counseling theories will be presented. Skill<br />
practice will be included. Lab experience required.<br />
EDGC 6450 Group Work<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: EDGC 6430 and admission to degree program or consent<br />
<strong>of</strong> department. An examination <strong>of</strong> the history, contemporary<br />
research findings, and conceptual models, process issues, and ethics<br />
involved in the effective practice <strong>of</strong> group work. Participation in a<br />
group experience required.<br />
EDGC 6452 Intro Multiculturl Counseling<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: EDGC 6430 and admission to a degree program or<br />
consent <strong>of</strong> department. The application <strong>of</strong> counseling techniques<br />
to special populations with culturally different backgrounds. The<br />
course is designed to help counselors maximize their effectiveness<br />
by understanding both similarities and differences <strong>of</strong> a multicultural<br />
population.<br />
EDGC 6460 Supervsd Experience Group Work<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: doctoral standing or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Through<br />
supervised experience, examination <strong>of</strong> contemporary conceptual<br />
model, and research findings which emphasize process and content<br />
issues, students will learn to lead interpersonal problem solving<br />
and task groups effectively.<br />
EDGC 6500 Cont Urban Problems Counseling<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: admission to degree program or consent <strong>of</strong> department.<br />
The identification and investigation <strong>of</strong> contemporary counseling<br />
problems and the examination <strong>of</strong> trends and innovations<br />
particularly adaptive to the resolution <strong>of</strong> these problems.<br />
EDGC 6525 Employee Assistance Counseling<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: EDGC 6330, 6400, 6430 and admission to a degree program<br />
or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Theories and techniques <strong>of</strong> counseling<br />
employees in business and industrial settings are covered<br />
in this course designed for students in counseling and counseling<br />
related fields. Additionally, this course will acquaint students<br />
with the history, development, functions and current research on<br />
employee assistance programs.<br />
EDGC 6530 Student Services High Educ<br />
3 cr.<br />
(EDAD 6530 and EDGC 6530 are cross-listed) A study <strong>of</strong> student personnel<br />
programs in colleges and universities. The history, philosophy,<br />
and organization; student rights and responsibilities; discipline;<br />
and administration <strong>of</strong> these programs within the context <strong>of</strong> the<br />
purpose <strong>of</strong> higher education institutions.<br />
EDGC 6535 Human Services Counseling<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: EDGC 6400 and admission to degree program or<br />
consent <strong>of</strong> department. The theory and practice <strong>of</strong> counseling as<br />
applied to human services agencies. The role and function <strong>of</strong> the<br />
counselor in human services agencies are emphasized. A study <strong>of</strong><br />
the diagnosis and treatment <strong>of</strong> mental and emotional disorders is<br />
required.<br />
EDGC 6540 Counseling in Community<br />
3 cr.<br />
This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> the theory and practice <strong>of</strong><br />
counseling in human services agencies and other community settings.<br />
Emphasis is given to the role, function, and pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
identity <strong>of</strong> community counselors, and to principles and practices<br />
<strong>of</strong> community outreach, intervention, education, consultation, and<br />
client advocacy.<br />
EDGC 6550 School Counseling<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: EDGC 6400 and admission to degree program or consent<br />
<strong>of</strong> department. This course will provide an introduction to<br />
current concepts relative to the school counseling pr<strong>of</strong>ession. Practical<br />
application <strong>of</strong> concepts within the diverse range <strong>of</strong> school<br />
environments will be covered. Structuring and implementation <strong>of</strong> a<br />
feasible comprehensive counseling program will be emphasized.<br />
EDGC 6630 Analysis <strong>of</strong> the Individual<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: admission to degree program or consent <strong>of</strong> department.<br />
Qualitative and quantitative assessment <strong>of</strong> the individual in<br />
various phases <strong>of</strong> development, traits, potentialities, and accomplishments.<br />
Assessment techniques are examined with regard to<br />
health development. Developing a case study and planning treatment<br />
are included.<br />
EDGC 6660 Crisis Intervention Counseling<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: EDGC 6430 and admission to a degree program or<br />
consent <strong>of</strong> department. The theory and practical application <strong>of</strong><br />
crisis intervention techniques. Special attention is given to counseling<br />
approaches for use with circumstantial and developmental life<br />
crises.<br />
EDGC 6810 Introd to Supervision in Couns<br />
3 cr.<br />
The theories and techniques counselor supervisors utilize in providing<br />
clinical supervision to counselors. The process <strong>of</strong> administrative<br />
supervision utilized by counselor in work settings.<br />
EDGC 6820 Org & Admin Guidance Services<br />
3 cr.<br />
The organization and administration <strong>of</strong> guidance programs.<br />
EDGC 6830 Couns Children & Adolescents<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: EDGC 6400, 6430, and admission to degree program<br />
or consent <strong>of</strong> department. The study <strong>of</strong> counseling children and<br />
adolescents in elementary, middle, and high schools or community<br />
agencies. Focus on counseling theories, techniques, concepts, interventions,<br />
and skills appropriate for children and adolescents.<br />
EDGC 6840 Family Counseling<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: admission to a degree program or consent <strong>of</strong> department.<br />
An introduction to the theoretical models and practitioner<br />
skills for counseling with families. The course includes specific<br />
emphasis on short-term approaches for family-related counseling<br />
problems.<br />
EDGC 6850 Ethical & Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Issues<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: admission to degree program or consent <strong>of</strong> department.<br />
This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> the critical pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
issues in counseling with emphasis on current ethical and valuesrelated<br />
questions and their relationship to the counselor’s role in<br />
training, supervision, consultation, appraisal, and research.<br />
