HUMS 4090G Special Topics in Humanities<br />
3 cr.<br />
An interdisciplinary course in the humanities. Topics will vary. May<br />
be repeated once for credit.<br />
International Studies<br />
IS 4998 Internship Internatnl Studies<br />
3-6 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: consent <strong>of</strong> the director <strong>of</strong> International Studies. The<br />
internship requirement for the IS degree includes at least 3 but no<br />
more than 6 hours <strong>of</strong> credit. A 3-hour credit involves 120 hours <strong>of</strong><br />
work during the semester or summer term. The internship may be<br />
either student-initiated or faculty/administrator-initiated. Internships<br />
are available in local consular <strong>of</strong>fices, corporations, and<br />
non-governmental and governmental agencies, or can be arranged<br />
through our international exchange partners abroad.<br />
Italian<br />
ITAL 1001 Basic Italian I<br />
3 cr.<br />
The first in a sequence <strong>of</strong> courses developing all four language<br />
skills; speaking, understanding, writing, and reading. No previous<br />
knowledge <strong>of</strong> the language required.<br />
ITAL 1002 Basic Italian II<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: ITAL 1001 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. A continuation <strong>of</strong><br />
the development <strong>of</strong> the four language skills.<br />
ITAL 2001 Intermediate Italian I<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: ITAL 1002 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. A continuation<br />
<strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> the four language skills with emphasis on<br />
reading and understanding.<br />
ITAL 2002 Intermediate Italian II<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: ITAL 2001 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. A continuation <strong>of</strong><br />
the development <strong>of</strong> the four language skills with special emphasis<br />
on oral expression in the language.<br />
ITAL 3031 Italian Conversation<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: ITAL 2002 or consent <strong>of</strong> instructor. Conversation, oral<br />
discussions, interpretations, and reports; practicing the spoken<br />
language.<br />
ITAL 3100 Survey Italian Literature<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: ITAL 2002 or 3031 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. A study <strong>of</strong><br />
the main authors and literary movements <strong>of</strong> Italian literature from<br />
its origins to the present. Designed to introduce students to the<br />
reading and analysis <strong>of</strong> important works in the original language.<br />
Lectures and discussions will be in English.<br />
ITAL 3191 Independent Work<br />
1 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. Readings and conferences<br />
under the direction <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the faculty. The course introduces<br />
the student to major authors and movements <strong>of</strong> Italian literature.<br />
Each course may be repeated, but combined credit may not<br />
exceed six semester hours.<br />

Different Italian works in translation are chose each time for reading,<br />
analysis, and discussion.<br />
Japanese<br />
JAPN 1001 Basic Japanese<br />
3 cr.<br />
A sequence <strong>of</strong> courses for beginners that aims at the acquisition<br />
<strong>of</strong> the four basic language skills: speaking, understanding, reading,<br />
and writing. The mastery <strong>of</strong> basic language structures will be<br />
achieved through aural-oral exercises and practice. The Japanese<br />
writing system will be introduced from the beginning (all Katakana<br />
and Hiragana). Kanji (Chinese characters) will be gradually<br />
introduced later in the first course.<br />

JAPN 2001 Intermediate Japanese<br />
3 cr.<br />
Continuation <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> all four language skills: speaking,<br />
understanding, reading, and writing. The course includes the<br />
study <strong>of</strong> approximately 100 Japanese characters, and the presentation<br />
and discussion <strong>of</strong> Japanese culture.<br />
JAPN 2002 Intermediate Japanese<br />
3 cr.<br />
Continuation <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> all language skills: speaking,<br />
understanding, reading, and writing. The course includes the study<br />
<strong>of</strong> additional Japanese characters and the presentation and discussion<br />
<strong>of</strong> aspects <strong>of</strong> Japanese culture.<br />

JOUR 2700 Introduction to Journalism<br />

gathering, copy, and continuity composition, basic skills and techniques<br />
