a basic, general understanding <strong>of</strong> the significant contributions made<br />

by African people in Africa and in the African diaspora.<br />

The requirements <strong>of</strong> the major are as follows:<br />

1. Completion <strong>of</strong> the requirements <strong>of</strong> a degree in one <strong>of</strong> the colleges<br />

at UNO.<br />

2. Completion <strong>of</strong> History 1010, either English 2071 or 2072, and either<br />

History 3551 or 3552.<br />

3. Completion <strong>of</strong> nine credit hours to be taken from a list <strong>of</strong><br />

approved courses. To complete 18 credit hours, the student must<br />

choose courses from a minimum <strong>of</strong> three disciplines. At least six<br />

credit hours must consist <strong>of</strong> courses at the 3000 level or above.<br />

4. The Coordinator may permit substitution <strong>of</strong> as many as six <strong>of</strong><br />

these 18 hours in UNO Special Topic or Independent Study courses.<br />

Appropriate courses <strong>of</strong>fered at UNO or other universities may be<br />

suggested as substitutes. The Coordinator may assign each student<br />

to a faculty advisor who will help the student design the minor<br />

program. Courses on Africana Studies in the major field that are<br />

counted as credit hours for that major may not also be counted<br />

toward this minor.<br />

Minor in Asian Studies<br />

The College <strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts administers the interdisciplinary Minor<br />

in Asian Studies. The purpose <strong>of</strong> this minor is to acquaint students<br />

with current and historical knowledge <strong>of</strong> the Asian region, peoples,<br />

and cultures. The minor signifies that students have a basic and general<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> this part <strong>of</strong> the world. The requirements <strong>of</strong> this<br />

minor are as follows:<br />

1. Completion <strong>of</strong> the requirements <strong>of</strong> a degree in one <strong>of</strong> the colleges<br />

at UNO.<br />

2. Completion <strong>of</strong> four semesters (a minimum <strong>of</strong> 12 credit hours) <strong>of</strong><br />

Chinese, Japanese, or other relevant language through 2002 or its<br />

equivalent.<br />

3. Completion <strong>of</strong> History 2201 and 2202 (the survey <strong>of</strong> Asian<br />

civilizations).<br />

4. Credit in courses on Asia to be approved by the Coordinator, for<br />

a total <strong>of</strong> 12 credit hours in addition to the language and history<br />

requirement. At least six credit hours must be at the 3000 level or<br />

above. In addition, six <strong>of</strong> the 12 credit hours must be chosen from<br />

at least two disciplines outside <strong>of</strong> history and language, with no<br />

more that nine credit hours from any one discipline. Courses on<br />

Asia in the major field that are counted as credit hours for that<br />

major may not also be counted toward this minor.<br />

5. A minimum 2.0 grade-point average must be attained in all<br />

courses in the minor program.<br />

Minor in Environmental Studies<br />

The Minor in Environmental Studies draws its required and<br />

optional courses from seven disciplines in the College <strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts.<br />

This interdisciplinary approach introduces students to the complexity<br />

<strong>of</strong> human-environmental relationships and problems. The Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sociology administers the minor.<br />

The requirements <strong>of</strong> the minor are as follows:<br />

1. Completion <strong>of</strong> the requirements <strong>of</strong> a degree in one <strong>of</strong> the colleges<br />

at UNO.<br />

2. Completion <strong>of</strong> two core courses: Geography 1600 and Sociology<br />

2871.<br />

3. Completion <strong>of</strong> 15 credit hours from an approved list* (in addition<br />

to the core courses) including courses from at least three Liberal<br />

Arts disciplines but no more than six credit hours from any one<br />

discipline.<br />

4. Students must maintain at least a 2.0 grade-point average in all<br />

courses used to fulfill this minor.<br />

* Approved courses for the minor: Anthropology 2051, 2052, 4721, 4761;<br />

Fine Arts 4263; Geography 1600, 2158, 4158, 4320, 4220, 4550; History<br />

2080, 4543, 4582; Philosophy 3430, 4205; Political Science 4170; Sociology<br />

2871, 4871, 4881, 4903 .<br />

Students wishing to take a course not on the approved list must get<br />

permission from the Director <strong>of</strong> Environmental Studies in the Sociology<br />

Department. To meet the prerequisite requirements for some <strong>of</strong><br />

the approved courses, students may need to complete more than the<br />

minimum 21 hours required for this minor.<br />

Minor in European Studies<br />

The College <strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts administers the interdisciplinary minor<br />

in European Studies. The purpose <strong>of</strong> this minor is to acquaint the student<br />

with historical and current knowledge <strong>of</strong> the European region,<br />

peoples, societies, economies, and cultures. The minor signifies that<br />

students have a basic and general understanding <strong>of</strong> this part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

world. The requirements <strong>of</strong> this minor are as follows:<br />

1. Completion <strong>of</strong> the requirements <strong>of</strong> a degree in one <strong>of</strong> the colleges<br />

at UNO.<br />

2. Completion <strong>of</strong> courses in French, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian,<br />

or other relevant languages through 2002 or its equivalent.<br />

3. Completion <strong>of</strong> six credit hours in one <strong>of</strong> two core curricula:<br />

a. Core I: Social Sciences (Anthropology 2052; Geography 2422,<br />

History 1001, 1002, 1019, 1029; Political Science 2600).<br />

b. Core II: Arts and Letters (English 2371, 2372; Fine Arts 2201, 2202;<br />

Music 2201, 2202; Philosophy 2311, 2312).<br />

4. Credit courses in European Studies to be approved by the Coordinator,<br />

for a total <strong>of</strong> 12 credit hours with a minimum 2.0 gradepoint<br />

average, to include at least six credit hours at the 3000 level<br />

or above. These 12 credit hours must be chosen from a minimum<br />

<strong>of</strong> three disciplines and must cover different time periods. Courses<br />

on Europe in the major field that are counted as credits for that<br />

major may not also be counted toward this minor.<br />

5. A minimum 2.0 grade-point average must be attained in all<br />

courses in the minor program.<br />

Minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies<br />

The College <strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts administers the interdisciplinary Minor<br />

in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. The purpose <strong>of</strong> this minor is<br />

to acquaint the student with current and historical knowledge <strong>of</strong> the<br />

region known as Latin America and the Caribbean. The minor signifies<br />

that the student has a basic and general understanding <strong>of</strong> the peoples<br />

and cultures <strong>of</strong> this part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>New</strong> World. The requirements <strong>of</strong> the<br />

minor are as follows:<br />

1. Completion <strong>of</strong> the requirements <strong>of</strong> a degree in one <strong>of</strong> the colleges<br />

at UNO.<br />

2. Completion <strong>of</strong> 12 semester hours <strong>of</strong> Spanish language course<br />

work.<br />

3. Credit in courses on Latin America and the Caribbean, to be<br />

approved by the Coordinator <strong>of</strong> Area Studies Minors, for a total<br />

<strong>of</strong> 18 credit hours with a minimum 2.0 grade point average to<br />

include at least six credit hours at the 3000 level or above. These<br />

18 credit hours must be chosen from a minimum <strong>of</strong> three disciplines,<br />
