Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. Guided experience in sightreading,<br />

preparation and performance <strong>of</strong> accompaniments for<br />

MUS 1910 <strong>University</strong> Orchestra<br />

1 cr.<br />

Offered each semester. Prerequisite: audition. Study and performance<br />

<strong>of</strong> orchestral repertoire. May be repeated for credit to a<br />

total <strong>of</strong> eight semester hours.<br />

MUS 1950 Opera Theater<br />

1 cr.<br />

Open to voice students or by consent <strong>of</strong> department. A workshop<br />

course especially designed for the coordination <strong>of</strong> music and acting<br />

with particular emphasis on training the singing actor. Coaching<br />

in operatic scenes and training in the basic principles <strong>of</strong> dramatic<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> opera. Three hours <strong>of</strong> laboratory per week. May be<br />

repeated for credit to a total <strong>of</strong> eight semester hours.<br />

MUS 2000 Field Research in Arts<br />

1-3 cr.<br />

(FTCA 2000, FA 2000, and MUS 2000 are cross-listed) Prerequisite:<br />

consent <strong>of</strong> department. Special research project in the arts involving<br />

field experience and study outside the city <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Orleans</strong>.<br />

Advance preparation for the project will include conference with<br />

or lecture by the faculty and readings in the specific areas to be<br />

studied. The study trip will consist <strong>of</strong> attendance at a minimum<br />

<strong>of</strong> four theatrical or musical performances or a minimum <strong>of</strong> eight<br />

hours spent in visits to exhibits or museums for each hour <strong>of</strong> credit.<br />

A follow-up paper on a research topic inspired by the trip will be<br />

required. May be repeated for up to six hours <strong>of</strong> credit. Credit will<br />

be given for only FTCA 2000, FA 2000, or MUS 2000 for the same<br />

trip.<br />

MUS 2001 Special Topics-Music<br />

1-3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. Specific areas <strong>of</strong> interest will<br />

be studied under the direction <strong>of</strong> a faculty member. Topics may<br />

vary from semester to semester. This course may be repeated but<br />

total credit may not exceed six semester hours. Section number will<br />

correspond with credit to be earned.<br />

MUS 2005 Intro To Music Technology<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: MUS 1102 or equivalent. This course will provide an<br />

introduction to and hands-on use <strong>of</strong> the hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

contained in the Department <strong>of</strong> Music computer lab. Students will<br />

be trained in the use <strong>of</strong> the Finale music notation program to give<br />

them an effective method <strong>of</strong> notating their projects and assignments<br />

and a means to create virtual performances <strong>of</strong> their musical<br />

compositions through MIDI synchronization. Additionally, students<br />

will gain mastery <strong>of</strong> various audio editing programs in order to be<br />

able to convert their own finished projects to CD or MP3 format.<br />

MUS 2101 Music Theory III<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: MUS 1102 or equivalent. Principles <strong>of</strong> tonal music as<br />

exemplified by selected Classic and Romantic composers. Emphasis<br />

on melody, rhythm, texture, modulation, functional and nonfunctional<br />

harmony, dramatic techniques, and formal structures <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Classic and Romantic eras.<br />
