continue in a teacher education program.<br />

Each candidate is held responsible for knowing degree requirements,<br />

for enrolling in courses that fit into his or her degree program,<br />

and for taking courses in the proper sequence to ensure orderly progression<br />

<strong>of</strong> work. The candidate is also held responsible for knowing<br />

<strong>University</strong> regulations regarding the standard <strong>of</strong> work required<br />

to continue in the <strong>University</strong>, as well as the regulations dealing with<br />

scholastic probation and enforced withdrawal.<br />

Admission to and Retention in the Teacher Education<br />

Program (Tier III)<br />

In addition to the requirements and regulations stated in Undergraduate<br />

Teacher Certification: Admission to and Retention in the College<br />

<strong>of</strong> Education and Human Development, applicants for admission<br />

to a teacher education program must:<br />

1. Have a grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 2.5 or higher for a minimum <strong>of</strong> 45<br />

credits.<br />

2. Take and receive passing scores on the PRAXIS I<br />

3. Complete an application to the Teacher Education Program.<br />

4. Complete Education 2000, 2100, and 2200 and associated field<br />

activities or their equivalents.<br />

5. Pass the Core Performance Assessment for the teacher education<br />

program.<br />

6. Complete disposition review with a satisfactory rating.<br />

7. Complete English 1158 with a grade <strong>of</strong> “C” or higher with credit in<br />

English 1157 or receive pr<strong>of</strong>iciency examination credit in English<br />

1158 with credit in English 1157.<br />

8. Complete a mathematics course at or above the 1000 level<br />

approved by the College <strong>of</strong> Education and Human Development.<br />

9. Complete individualized prescriptive plan if applicable.<br />

Requirements for Field Experience<br />

Teacher education candidates complete a variety <strong>of</strong> field activities<br />

as they progress through the program <strong>of</strong> study. The field activities provide<br />

opportunities for candidates to demonstrate skills associated with<br />

effective teaching in diverse school and classroom settings. Each <strong>of</strong> the<br />

four tiers in the program requires a specific minimum number <strong>of</strong> field<br />

experience hours and completed field activities. Specific information<br />

on field experience requirements may be found at the college web site<br />

at http://www.ed.uno.edu/.<br />

Requirements for Student Teaching (Tier IV)<br />

Application for student teaching must be submitted to the Office <strong>of</strong><br />

Field Experiences during Tier III one semester prior to beginning the<br />

student teaching semester (Tier IV). Candidates expecting to student<br />

teach in the fall semester must apply on or before January 31. Candidates<br />

expecting to student teach in the spring semester must apply on<br />

or before August 31.<br />

A candidate will only be permitted to enroll in student teaching (9<br />

hours) and EDUC 4000 (3 hours) during the student teaching semester.<br />

Candidates are permitted to schedule student teaching when they<br />

have met the following requirements:<br />

1. Completion <strong>of</strong> all other courses in the certification and degree<br />

program except for student teaching and EDUC 4000 (must be<br />

taken concurrently with student teaching).<br />

2. The attainment <strong>of</strong> senior standing in a Teacher Education Program<br />

in the College <strong>of</strong> Education and Human Development with<br />

a minimum grade point average <strong>of</strong> 2.5.<br />

3. Completion <strong>of</strong> all courses in pr<strong>of</strong>essional education with a grade<br />

<strong>of</strong> “C” or higher. Candidates in secondary education and combined<br />

elementary-secondary education must also complete all courses<br />

in the major teaching field with a grade <strong>of</strong> “C” or higher. Candidates<br />

must meet or exceed content/performance GPA for specific<br />

content area.<br />

4. Pass Tier III performance requirements for the certification area<br />

pursued.<br />

5. Complete disposition review with a satisfactory rating.<br />

6. Approval <strong>of</strong> the Director <strong>of</strong> Field Experiences.<br />

7. Transfer candidates must have completed all Tier III course-work<br />

in residence at UNO.<br />

8. Complete individualized prescriptive plan if applicable<br />

Note: The College <strong>of</strong> Education and Human Development recommends<br />

that candidates take PRAXIS II examinations one semester prior to<br />

student teaching.<br />

Requirements for Program Completion and Graduation<br />

A candidate must meet all the requirements for a degree out-lined<br />

in one catalog. A candidate may elect any catalog in force during his<br />

or her enrollment at the <strong>University</strong>, provided enrollment is continuous.<br />

A candidate who breaks enrollment (either voluntarily or by compulsion)<br />

for two consecutive semesters may not elect a catalog earlier<br />

than the one in force at the time <strong>of</strong> re-entry. Under no circumstances<br />

may a catalog more than 10 years old be used.<br />

Candidates pursuing degree programs that include Louisiana<br />

teacher certification should note that certification requirements are<br />

mandated by the Louisiana Board <strong>of</strong> Elementary and Secondary Education.<br />

When the State Board makes changes in certification requirements,<br />

the content <strong>of</strong> associated degree programs change accordingly.<br />

For this reason, candidates in the College <strong>of</strong> Education and Human<br />

Development are expected to maintain close communication about<br />

degree and certification requirements through a College Academic<br />

Counselor or Faculty Advisor throughout their program <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

A candidate may graduate from the College <strong>of</strong> Education and<br />

Human Development upon satisfactory fulfillment <strong>of</strong> the following<br />

requirements:<br />

1. Completion <strong>of</strong> the general degree requirements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

2. Completion <strong>of</strong> the requirements for a bachelors degree in either<br />

preschool, elementary, secondary, or elementary-secondary<br />

education.<br />

3. Demonstration <strong>of</strong> all required performances and dispositions<br />

via a successful review <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essional portfolio and related<br />

evidence.<br />

4. For candidates in preschool and elementary education:<br />

a. A minimum grade <strong>of</strong> “C” in each course in pr<strong>of</strong>essional education<br />

and each course in the focus area.<br />

b. Achievement <strong>of</strong> an overall grade point average <strong>of</strong> 2.5 and a<br />

grade-point average in pr<strong>of</strong>essional education <strong>of</strong> 2.0.<br />

c. Meet or exceed content/performance GPA for specific content<br />

area.<br />

5. For candidates in secondary and elementary secondary<br />

education:<br />

a. minimum grade <strong>of</strong> “C” in each course in pr<strong>of</strong>essional education<br />

and in each course in the academic content area(s).<br />

b. Achievement <strong>of</strong> an overall grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 2.5 and a<br />

2.0 grade-point average in pr<strong>of</strong>essional education and the academic<br />

content area(s).<br />

c. Meet or exceed content/performance GPA for specific content<br />

area.<br />

6. Candidates seeking teacher certification through a baccalaureate<br />

degree program must take and pass PRAXIS subject assessment(s)<br />

and content area test(s) and the Principles <strong>of</strong> Learning and<br />

Teaching prior to program completion and graduation.<br />

Louisiana Teacher Certification<br />

In addition to the graduation requirements listed above, a candidate<br />

must meet the following requirements <strong>of</strong> the State <strong>of</strong> Louisiana in<br />

order to be eligible for a Louisiana teacher’s certificate.<br />

1. Be admitted to and graduate from a state approved teacher education<br />

program. (Teacher education programs in the College <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Orleans</strong>/64
