FIN 7050 Dissertation Research<br />
1-9 cr.<br />
(ECON 7050 and FIN 7050 are cross-listed) Preparation <strong>of</strong> dissertation<br />
by Ph.D. candidate under direction <strong>of</strong> major pr<strong>of</strong>essor and dissertation<br />
committee. Section number will correspond with credit to<br />
be earned. To be repeated for credit until dissertation is accepted.<br />
FIN 7051 Dissertation Workshop<br />
1 cr.<br />
(ECON 7051 and FIN 7051 are cross-listed) Prerequisite: Consent <strong>of</strong><br />
the department. This is a required course for all third year Ph.<br />
D. Students in Financial Economics. Students will present progress<br />
reports on their dissertation research for critique by faculty and<br />
other graduate students.<br />

FORL 1001 Select Foreign Language<br />
3 cr.<br />
The first <strong>of</strong> two courses for beginners to acquire basic fluency<br />
in the target language. Emphasis is on speaking and understanding,<br />
with some attention to reading and writing. The mastery <strong>of</strong><br />
basic skills will be required to study a textbook and listen to audio<br />
tapes prior to meeting with an assigned native-speaking tutor for<br />
intensive sessions throughout the semester. Students may arrange<br />
to take this course on a non-credit basis.<br />

Prerequisite: FORL 1002 or consent <strong>of</strong> Critical Languages Program<br />
Coordinator. A continuation <strong>of</strong> courses for intermediate learners<br />

to reading and writing. The mastery <strong>of</strong> intermediate skills will<br />
be achieved through intensive aural-oral exercises and practice.<br />

Continuation <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> all four language skills:<br />
speaking, understanding, writing, and reading with special emphasis<br />
on the last skill. Audio-visual items will be used to enhance the<br />

Offered each semester. Prerequisite: FREN 2001 or consent <strong>of</strong> department.<br />
Readings and exercises in French. Increased emphasis on the<br />
development <strong>of</strong> advanced reading and translation skills.<br />
FREN 3002 Practical French Phonetics<br />
3 cr.<br />
Analysis <strong>of</strong> the phonetic system <strong>of</strong> French. Intensive practice in<br />
the language laboratory (ear training, transcription, and corrective<br />
exercises). A consideration <strong>of</strong> the problems <strong>of</strong> teaching French<br />
pronunciation to English-speaking students.<br />
FREN 3005 Romance Linguistics<br />
3 cr.<br />
(SPAN 3005 and FREN 3005 are cross-listed) Comparative study <strong>of</strong><br />
the history, phonology, morphology, and syntax <strong>of</strong> the principal<br />
Romance languages.<br />
FREN 3031 French Conversation<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: FREN 2002 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Conversation,<br />
oral discussions, interpretations, and reports; practicing the spoken<br />
language.<br />
FREN 3041 Advanced French Grammar<br />
3 cr.<br />
Fall semester. Intensive study <strong>of</strong> French grammar and syntax. This<br />
course is designed primarily for prospective teachers and students<br />
concentrating in French.<br />
FREN 3042 Advanced French Comp & Syntax<br />
3 cr.<br />
Spring semester. Prerequisite: FREN 3041. Drill in original descriptive<br />
and narrative composition in the language with attention to style,<br />
syntax, idioms, and verb forms.<br />
FREN 3090 Advanced Practical French<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: completion <strong>of</strong> 12 hours <strong>of</strong> beginning and intermediate<br />
level <strong>of</strong> the four-skills French sequence FREN 1001, 1002, 2001,<br />
2002, or equivalent credit. Intensive instruction in the French language<br />
taught in France or in a French-speaking country and open<br />
only to students in the UNO-Montpellier Summer School or similar<br />
programs. Particular emphasis is placed on oral pr<strong>of</strong>iciency, sociolinguistic<br />
competence, and cultural awareness.<br />
