Spanish requirements for Spanish majors:<br />
1. A minimum <strong>of</strong> 30 semester hours in Spanish courses, not including<br />
1001, 1002, 2001 and 2002.<br />
2. Spanish 3031, 3041, 3042, 3055, 3100, 3101, and 3002. Spanish 3055<br />
and 3100 and 3101 must be taken prior to, or concurrently with,<br />
more advanced literature courses.<br />
3. At least nine hours <strong>of</strong> Spanish courses beyond 3000, including six<br />
hours at the 4000 level.<br />
4. Spanish 3197 will fulfill the <strong>University</strong> requirement for oral<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>iciency.<br />
5. Spanish 3500 - The Written Exit Exam<br />
General requirements for Spanish majors:<br />
1. English 2341, 2342 (to be taken prior to, or concurrently with,<br />
Spanish 3055, 3100, 3101).<br />
2. History 1001, 1002.<br />
3. Latin-American or European History (six hours <strong>of</strong> courses numbered<br />
above 2000; Spanish 4201 or 4202 may be substituted for<br />
three or six <strong>of</strong> these hours. If Spanish is used, equal number <strong>of</strong><br />
hours <strong>of</strong> social science must be elected for each substitution.)<br />
In all cases college subject requirements should be completed before<br />
taking electives. Refer to the university and college requirements for<br />
particulars. In conference with a foreign language advisor each student<br />
will plan a balanced and coherent program designed for the student’s<br />
particular needs and interests. Through choice <strong>of</strong> electives the student<br />
may wish to combine the major program with another field <strong>of</strong> study:<br />
a second foreign language and literature, linguistics, the civilization <strong>of</strong><br />
an area, an allied subject within the humanities, an allied field within<br />
the social sciences, sciences, or business administration.<br />
Minor in Spanish<br />
A minor requiring 18 credit hours <strong>of</strong> Spanish with a 2.0 grade point<br />
average is <strong>of</strong>fered. Specific courses are: 2002 or 2004, 3031, 3041, 3042,<br />
3100, or 3101, and three additional hours beyond 3101.<br />
Honors in Spanish<br />
An honors program in Spanish is available to superior students,<br />
both Spanish majors and non-majors. Successful completion <strong>of</strong> this<br />
program will carry the designation With Honors in Spanish on the<br />
student’s diploma.<br />
Honors in Spanish for Spanish majors:<br />
To graduate with honors in Spanish, Spanish majors must:<br />
1. Fulfill the usual requirements for Spanish majors.<br />
2. Maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 3.5 in<br />
Spanish courses and an overall 3.25 average.<br />
3. Complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> six credit hours in interdepartmental<br />
(Arts and Sciences) honors courses.<br />
4. Receive credit for Spanish 3199 by writing an honors essay, as well<br />
as a summary <strong>of</strong> it to be written in Spanish, approved by three<br />
members <strong>of</strong> the foreign language faculty.<br />
5. During the course <strong>of</strong> the program, but prior to the writing <strong>of</strong> the<br />
honors essay, the student must demonstrate oral pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in<br />
the language by means <strong>of</strong> an examination administered by the<br />
faculty.<br />
Honors in Spanish for students not majoring in Spanish:<br />
To graduate with honors in Spanish, students not majoring in<br />
Spanish must:<br />
1. Complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> 12 semester hours in Spanish courses<br />
numbered 3100 or above. These courses, which must be approved<br />
by the Spanish faculty, must include at least six hours in courses<br />
numbered 3200 or above.<br />
2. Maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 3.5 in<br />
Spanish courses and an overall 3.25 average.<br />
3. Complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> six credit hours in interdepartmental<br />
(Arts and Sciences) honors courses.<br />

Students majoring in Women’s Studies must complete a minimum<br />
<strong>of</strong> 39 hours in:<br />
Core Courses: 12 hours, consisting <strong>of</strong> Women’s Studies 2010, 3095,<br />
4078, and 4080.<br />
Elective Courses: 27 hours, representing at least three different<br />
departments and covering the four knowledge areas <strong>of</strong> sexuality and<br />
gender; race/ethnicity and class in the U.S.; global perspectives; and<br />
creative arts.<br />
1. At least 18 hours <strong>of</strong> these electives must be drawn from Women’s<br />
Studies courses or courses cross-listed in Women’s Studies. Such<br />
approved electives include:<br />
a. Women’s Studies 2090, 3090, 3091, 3092, 3093, 4070, 4090.<br />
