PSYC 6050 Sem in Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Problems<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. Review <strong>of</strong> licensing requirements<br />

in Louisiana and other states; ethical standards in practice,<br />

teaching, and research; and laws governing the use <strong>of</strong> humans<br />

and animals in research. Review <strong>of</strong> research grant application procedures,<br />

practicum responsibilities, and an overview <strong>of</strong> standard<br />

practices in the instruction <strong>of</strong> psychology courses.<br />

PSYC 6090 Ind Research in Psychology<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. This course may be repeated<br />

for credit. Research experience with psychological topics not being<br />

taken concurrently for thesis or dissertation credit. The individual<br />

student is responsible for the selection <strong>of</strong> the area <strong>of</strong> research.<br />

Offered each semester. All graduate students will be expected to<br />

participate in a report and discussion group in the field <strong>of</strong> psychology.<br />

Must be taken for credit a minimum <strong>of</strong> four times.<br />

PSYC 6101 Fund Appl Dev Psychology I<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: admission to graduate program in psychology or consent<br />

<strong>of</strong> department. A review <strong>of</strong> research and theory in life-span<br />

developmental psychology. Special consideration will be given to<br />

age-related changes in cognitive structure, language acquisition,<br />

sensation and perception, experiential influences, and social-emotional<br />

development.<br />

PSYC 6102 Fund Appl Dev Psychology II<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: PSYC 6101. This course is concerned with how psychological<br />

research and intervention strategies are combined in health<br />

and human services settings. Social policy and available services<br />

will be discussed.<br />

PSYC 6130 Infant Care & Stimulation<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: PSYC 6101. The course will deal with pre- and postnatal<br />

influences on early development from conception through<br />

three years <strong>of</strong> age. Topics will include prenatal development, learning,<br />

cognition, sensory processes, and social factors.<br />

PSYC 6150 Psychology <strong>of</strong> Aging<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: PSYC 6101. A review and evaluation <strong>of</strong> research and<br />

theories <strong>of</strong> the aging process. Emphasis will be placed on the application<br />

<strong>of</strong> basic research in neuropsychology, psychophysiology,<br />

psychopharmacology, cognition, environmental issues, interpersonal<br />

relations, stress and coping, and clinical issues.<br />

PSYC 6170 Prob in Soc-Emot Dev<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: PSYC 6101. A review and evaluation <strong>of</strong> research in<br />

social-emotional development throughout the life-span. Emphasis<br />

will be given to the determinants <strong>of</strong> deviant social-emotional<br />

development in childhood, maturity, and senescence. Techniques<br />

for the assessment and management <strong>of</strong> deviant development will<br />

be presented.<br />

PSYC 6180 Prob Cogn & Intellectual Dev<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: PSYC 6101. A review <strong>of</strong> the theoretical, methodological,<br />

and applied issues in cognitive and intellectual development across<br />

the life-span. Emphasis is placed on research and its practical application<br />

to cognitive and intellectual deficiencies.<br />

PSYC 6191 Practicum Develop Psychology<br />

3-6 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: PSYC 6050 6101 6311 6312 6350 6801 and either 6102<br />

or 6802. Supervised experience in various fields <strong>of</strong> applied developmental<br />

psychology. Amount <strong>of</strong> credit to be stated at time <strong>of</strong><br />

registration. May be repeated for credit.<br />

Prerequisite: PSYC 6101 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. The topics vary<br />

from semester to semester and may include current topics in social,<br />

personality, and cognitive development, developmental methods,<br />

or new or developing areas <strong>of</strong> application. This seminar may be<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: admission to graduate program in psychology or<br />

consent <strong>of</strong> department. Machine calculation, coding, measures <strong>of</strong><br />

centrality and variation, regression, correlation, prediction, probability,<br />

statistical inference, chi square, t and F distributions, simple<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> variance, multiple prediction, reliability and validity <strong>of</strong><br />

measurements.<br />

PSYC 6312 Advanced Statistics II<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: PSYC 6311. Complex analysis <strong>of</strong> variance designs: factorial,<br />

treatments-by-subjects, groups-within-treatments, mixed,<br />

random replications, Latin and Greco-Latin Squares. Analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

covariance, trend tests, non-parametric tests, sequential analysis,<br />

curve fitting.<br />

PSYC 6350 Advanced Learning<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: admission to graduate program in psychology or consent<br />

<strong>of</strong> department. An advanced study <strong>of</strong> the principles and theories<br />

<strong>of</strong> learning, including both animal and human learning. Two<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> lecture and two hours <strong>of</strong> laboratory.<br />

PSYC 6391 Sem Experimental Psychology<br />

3 cr.<br />

The topics will be varied from semester to semester and will<br />

include: discrimination learning, avoidance learning, verbal behavior,<br />

animal behavior, brain stimulation, and behavior. This seminar<br />

Prerequisites: PSYC 6311 6312. The topics will vary from semester to<br />

semester and may include such topics as Regression, Multivariate<br />

Analysis, Factor Analysis and Psychometric Theory. The seminar<br />

may be repeated for credit.<br />

PSYC 6400 Social Psychology<br />

3 cr.<br />

(SOC 6573 and PSYC 6400 are cross-listed) Analysis <strong>of</strong> the relationship<br />

between human behavior and social context, emphasizing<br />

the impact <strong>of</strong> social forces on social action and cognition. Topics<br />

include theoretical paradigms in social psychology, language use<br />

and interaction, small groups, self and identities, collective behavior,<br />

attitudes and behavior. Critical analysis <strong>of</strong> existing theory and<br />

research methodology will be considered for each topic.<br />

PSYC 6500 Clinical Psychology<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. An introduction to the problems<br />

<strong>of</strong> psychodiagnosis and psychotherapeutic techniques.<br />
