URBN 6510 Urb-Rural Issues Dev Countries<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: GEOG 4630 or URBN 4030 or consent <strong>of</strong> department.<br />

This seminar will explore the relationship between urbanization<br />

and the development process, with primary emphasis on the ways<br />

in which the content and outcomes <strong>of</strong> public policies affect the<br />

distribution <strong>of</strong> population and wealth. Issues to be covered include<br />

regional imbalances, migration, labor mobility, and housing.<br />

URBN 6700 Urban Spatial Analysis<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> school. This course is designed to familiarize<br />

the student with spatial models and geographic techniques <strong>of</strong><br />

metropolitan area analysis. It includes a systematic study <strong>of</strong> external<br />

and internal spatial relationships <strong>of</strong> cities and city systems.<br />

The urban field is examined in terms <strong>of</strong> images, patterns, processes,<br />

networks, communities, activities, problems, and prospects.<br />

URBN 6801 Sem Urb Analysis Comp & Sim<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> school. This is a methodology seminar in<br />

urban research, specifically emphasizing the use <strong>of</strong> computers and<br />

simulation techniques.<br />

URBN 6871 Environmental Analysis<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: URBN 6850 or consent <strong>of</strong> coordinators. An investigation<br />

<strong>of</strong> environmental problems from a sociological perspective,<br />

with an emphasis on environmental analysis, management, and<br />

policy.<br />

URBN 6900 Independent Study<br />

3 cr.<br />

Offered each semester. Independent research in the graduate student’s<br />

area <strong>of</strong> specialization under the direction <strong>of</strong> a designated<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the graduate faculty. May be repeated for credit.<br />

Offered each semester. To be repeated for credit until thesis<br />

is accepted. Section number will correspond with credit to be<br />

WS 2010 Introduction Women’s Studies<br />

3 cr.<br />

An introduction to the social, historical, and cultural dimensions <strong>of</strong><br />

women’s role in society.<br />

WS 2090 Topics in Women’s Studies<br />

3 cr.<br />

An open topics approach to the role <strong>of</strong> women. May be repeated<br />

once for credit.<br />

WS 3090 Internship in Women’s Studies<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: WS 2010 or consent <strong>of</strong> the Women’s Studies internship<br />

supervisor. The intern is placed in a private or public agency in<br />

order to gain practical experience in the application <strong>of</strong> women’s<br />

studies perspectives and methodologies. Interns usually work eight<br />

hours a week at times mutually agreeable to the individual and<br />

the agency. In addition, students must meet regularly with a faculty<br />

advisor and their work must be evaluated by both an agency<br />

supervisor and the faculty advisor.<br />

WS 3091 Ind Read & Res in Womn Studies<br />

1 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: One course from the Women’s Studies approved list<br />

and consent <strong>of</strong> the Director <strong>of</strong> Women’s Studies. The individual<br />

student will be responsible for selection <strong>of</strong> the area <strong>of</strong> reading and<br />

research. Readings, conferences, and reports or a major research<br />

project will be assigned by a member <strong>of</strong> the Women’s Studies faculty.<br />

In no case may a student register for WS 3091-93 for a total <strong>of</strong><br />

more than six hours.<br />

learning course combines classroom and community learning. All<br />

students will participate in projects at one designated community<br />

agency while using weekly class meetings to assess the connection<br />

between feminist theory and practice.<br />

(WS 4070, ENGL 4070 and SOC 4070 are cross-listed) Prerequisite:<br />

ENGL 2378 or SOC 1051 or WS 2010 or consent <strong>of</strong> instructors. A teamtaught,<br />

interdisciplinary study <strong>of</strong> women in literature and society.<br />

Variable topics include women and crime, women and work,<br />

women and the family, women and religion.<br />

primary and secondary sources. The course will familiarize students<br />

with local archives and exhibits. Oral reports on research<br />

projects will satisfy the university’s oral pr<strong>of</strong>iciency requirement.<br />
