ENGL 2312 International Film As Lit Art<br />

An introduction to the literary art <strong>of</strong> film based on representative<br />

international films. Completion <strong>of</strong> ENGL 2311 is recommended. A<br />

laboratory fee is required.<br />

ENGL 2371 Classics Western Literature I<br />

3 cr.<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> Greek and Latin literature in translation. This course<br />

will acquaint the student with major classical works and their<br />

influence on English and American literature. The course will<br />

include works by Homer, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Plato, Virgil,<br />

Horace, Catullus, Juvenal, and Ovid.<br />

ENGL 2372 Classics Western Literature II<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: three hours <strong>of</strong> literature courses numbered 2000 or<br />

above or consent <strong>of</strong> department. A study <strong>of</strong> European literature<br />

in translation. This course will acquaint the student with major<br />

French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Russian works and their<br />

influence on English and American literature.<br />

ENGL 2374 Asian Literature<br />

3 cr.<br />

An introductory survey <strong>of</strong> Asian literature in translation. The<br />

course will acquaint the student with major works <strong>of</strong> India, China,<br />

and Japan stressing their influence on the themes and genres <strong>of</strong><br />

contemporary Western literature.<br />

An introduction to the literary works <strong>of</strong> Asian Americans, including<br />

those <strong>of</strong> Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, Indonesian,<br />

and South Asian descent.<br />

An introductory survey <strong>of</strong> representative works by lesbian and<br />

An introductory survey <strong>of</strong> representative works in diverse literary<br />

forms by women from a wide variety <strong>of</strong> backgrounds and cultures<br />

with a focus on the idea <strong>of</strong> difference in women’s writings and<br />

consider their relation to issues <strong>of</strong> class race sexual orientation<br />

and social context.<br />

in curriculum supplementation; and an examination <strong>of</strong> the changing<br />

social and cultural patterns in children’s reading. This course<br />

can be used to satisfy general degree requirements in literature for<br />

upper elementary education students only.<br />

Prerequisite: 90 hours <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> credit or upon recommendation<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department and the director <strong>of</strong> the Honors<br />

Program. Directed research culminating in a written thesis to meet<br />

the requirements for graduation with Honors in English and if<br />

appropriate <strong>University</strong> Honors. Upon petition three hours <strong>of</strong> related<br />

course work in advanced English may be credited toward the thesis.<br />
